I was at work yesterday picking up my paycheck and up comes a cart pusher wearing his Cubs hat. Well he starts talking to me about the Cubs, (I call him the walking talking cubs.com) and ex-players that are on his top 10 of all time. He starts asking me trivia about the team. keep in mind he knows "everything" about the Cubs. These are my questions I didn't think too hard. Who did the Cubs beat in 1998 to win the Wild Card and earn a trip to Atlanta? his answer St. Louis. WRONG! I then go who beat the Cubs in 1984 NLCS to win the NL Pennant? He says Cincinatti. WRONG! Who hit the homer in a glomin? to give the Cubs the lead in the 1938 Pennant chase? He didn't know the answer. I took his Cub hat off I told him he couldn't put it back on until he answered my questions.:D If you don't know the history of this team thats okay but don't try to act like you know everything when you dont know nothing.

LOL!!! I've never met a Cub fan like that but I graduated with a guy who was like that with the Atlanta Braves, he thought he knew every thing about them yet the only players he could name on the team were Tom Glavin, Gregg Maddux, and John Smoltz.

I live in NM, and rarely see anyone with Cubs gear on. But in 2003 when they (well you know what happened) I saw Cubs stuff everywhere. The sports stores were sold out of everything Cubs. What I want to know is where were these "Cub Fans" when we started 0-14 in 1997? Heck where were they last year? I guarantee I will see Cub paraphonilia everywhere in October while we are ending our 99 year drought.

I wish our players knew more of the history of the team!

I'm glad they don't. They should create their own "history". The history of the Cubs is sad and depressing...

Sounds like a real toolbag. You should buy him a copy of Wrigleyville...

In NYC you see some Cubs fans, but it's mostly pseudo-Yankee (and now pseudo-Mess) fans, which is alwas funny because they have no conept of reality, except the Yankees win the World Series every year (then I point out it's going on 7 years). The Yankee fans act like they have no idea there was a team before 1996. Those are usually the first guys to talk junk about a guy wearing another team's hat, even though they're clueless about their own.

I know a lot about the Cubs from the last 5 seasons or so but beyond that I only know the major highlights. I like to think I know a lot for the time that I've followed them closely. But like I said I'm not afraid to say I don't knkow much past 5-10 years.

Now that sounds good to me

I'm in the same boat as you are BigZ38. ;) I also like to think I know a lot about the time I've followed them closely too. I like to give my opinions occasionally and agree or disagree with the posts on this site. But like I've said here before, I'm part of the fogpog community to read and learn.

Same here, I can't say I know too much in-depth history.

The learning of the history is all a part of the fun of being a cub fan. I think that is why I love listening to pat and ron so much more than the tv guys. Ron has such deep history and loves to share it, and it is so much more than just reading about it...he tells a lot of his era stuff as it is and more. I find it fascinating to just randomly pick one guy off the all time roster in the Cubs Media Guide and research him on the net. Maybe I will do this on here.... pick a different player each night and just do a little "bio" on him as a piece of Cubs History.... that way everyone else can jump on and add their knowledge, info, etc. We all learn something new! What do you guys think? Something worth trying?

BTW....great story!

Unfortunately, bandwagon fans are a fact of life with sports teams these days. Those of us who live in Chicago saw a dramatic shift of the bandwagonners since 03. Good riddance to them. But now, since we are getting serious about winning again, we will see another shift of said bandwagonners back to the northside.

Gabby Hartnett, dammit it took me a minute.

I not only love Cubs history I love baseball history. We may get bandwagon fans, but they will never know the joy we will feel when the Cubs win the WS this year. We are the fans that stuck through all those tumultuous times, so the title will mean more to us!

I know a kid who was in one of my classes last year, and he was making fun of me for being a Cubs fan because the Sox won the WS. Then earlier this year I saw him with a Cubs shirt on, and I was like, "What the hell, you're a Sox fan." and then he went on telling me that he only said that last year because he was mad at the Cubs for making a stupid play in a game. I didn't even bother talking to him anymore.

Yeah, When I was a kid.. my family only got cable during the summer time.. but then for about 10 years or so we never got it.. so until I was like 17, I didn't really get to follow them very close. Luckily, they welcomed me back with one huge heartbreak in 03, so it made up for it.

I personally can't stand bandwagon fans. Like when Florida won the football championship there was about 20 people in my school who started buying Florida stuff. I found this funny because I asked them, "Didn't you say Ohio St. would blow them out?" I always love when they just walk away.

Great post! These "bandwagon fans" are helping justify the payroll hike.

Yes they help justify the payroll, but I hate that they act like they have been Cubs fans all their life.

I have been a Cub fan all my life and a lot of people I hang out with hate Cubs fans cause they think they are pretentious A-holes.... I wonder why.

People root for the underdog. Who cares how long they have been a fan or if you know what Ryno's Jock strap smelled like and they don't. Just sit back root hard and try to educate the ignorant.

You need to drink more Beer. Then it won't matter how much "better" of a fan you are.
