MESA, Ariz. -- Lou Piniella said Tuesday morning he heard "encouraging" news about the condition of Kerry Wood, though he had no specifics about his latest shoulder injury.
"A lot of the soreness and pain is gone," Piniella said. "We'll continue to evaluate him over the next few days. Whatever he can do, we'll allow 'em to do."

Wood was evaluated by a team physician Monday. The Cubs are referring to Wood's injury as "shoulder fatigue" and he's being treated with anti-inflammatories. He'll be evaluated "day-to-day."
"It's in the shoulder," Piniella said without elaborating.
But while Piniella said Wood is feeling much better, he's still not able to throw off a mound.
"Maybe, maybe (he'll throw) on the side," Piniella said. "Maybe."
Piniella also confirmed that Wade Miller will be the fifth starter, making Mark Prior's Cactus League start Wednesday irrelevant. Though Miller was expected to be named to the fifth slot, Prior still had a foot in the door since he's still on the roster and in the spring rotation.
"How do you want me to describe this thing?" an exasperated Piniella said. "You want a crack in the door, or do you want (me) to finalize it?"
Asked for a final decision, Piniella said Miller "is going to be our fifth starter. OK? He's pitched well in camp. He's earned a spot, period."
Prior won't make the roster, and it's yet to be determined whether he will start out on the disabled list or simply be optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
"We'll figure that out in the next couple of days," Piniella said. "Obviously he needs to continue pitching, but I don't have the answer for you."
Sounds like Pinella is not going to handle the press like the old D**** guy did!
