What do the Cubs do with #31, when the next number is ready to be retired at Wrigley?

Fergie Jenkins wore #31 in the late 60's to early 70's, and then again in 82 and 83. He compiled a record of 167-132 as a Cubs pitcher. Overall, he had a 284-226 record as a major league pitcher. He had six straight 20+ win seasons as a Cubs pitcher. He won the Cy Young Award in 71 as a Cub. He played for the Cubs for 10 seasons.

Greg Maddux came out of the Cubs farm system in 1986. He pitched for the Cubs for the first seven years of his career. He wore #31 also. He won the 1st of 4 consecutive Cy Young Awards, as a member of the Cubs. He had a record of 133-112 as a Cub. He played for the Cubs for 10 seasons.

Fergie was a 3 time all-star, and hit 6hr during the 71 season.

Maddux is an 8 time all-star, is a 4 time Cy Young Award winner, and has 16 Gold Gloves.

How do you ever decide who is more deserving of #31?

How about hang the #31 on each of the poles...one for Maddux one for Fergie. I'm still holding on to hope that one day, Greg will return as a pitching coach for the Cubs, but Fergie is just as much a part of the Cubs history as Mr. Cub, Santo, and Williams.

i don't see how the Cubs could retire #31 for Maddux

Almost all his significant accomplishments came as an Atlanta Brave. It would be kind of selfish

IMO we should reserve retiring numbers for guys that go into the HOF as a Cub

How about a dual flag with Maddux/Jenkins on one side and 31 on the other, but yea if Mad dog goes in the hall as a brave, that'll make the decision alot easier.

I agree... It should be retired for Jenkins. Maddux will go into the HOF as a member of the Braves.

Maddux doesn't deserve his number retired by the Cubs in my opinion. He didn't win that World Series ring in a Cubs uniform. So I think #31 is Fergie's along with everyone else. I also think they should retire #8 for Hawk.

Between the two of them and their time with the Cubs you have exactly 300 wins and 2 Cy Young awards. Retire the number and attribute it to the both of them. I think it is fair and nobody gets slighted, fans or players.
