I now live in Vero Beach, FL and saw Samardzija pitch tonight for Daytona. He had a shaky first couple of innings as far as throwing balls and strikes but settled down and gave up 2 runs in 5 innings. Looked like the velocity on his fastball was very good. All in all I'd say he is a promising prospect for the Cubbies.

Lets hope they don't rush him like Prior and Wood.

They didn't rush Prior so much as overuse him. I remember one of his first games back from the achilles injury in '04 Dusty kept him out there to throw 126 pitches. IMO he's the guilty party in all this.

I'd be suprised if we saw Jeff in the bigs before 2009, but you never know with the all the injuries we've suffered in the past.

"Samardzija failing in MLB bid?

As Cubs prospect and former Notre Dame star receiver Jeff Samardzija warmed up for his season debut in April, the Brevard County (Fla.) Manatees blasted the USC fight song over the sound system. Samardzija is 0-5 this season. The Cubs bought him out of a possible NFL career in January, guaranteeing him $10 million. He has started 11 games this season, winning none, with a 5.75 ERA, a .349 opponents' batting average and only 20 strikeouts in 52 innings. The Cubs moved him to the bullpen last week."

Let's hope it is just him trying to hard to live up to the expectation of the contract. The kid needs to turn it around. Some say he may be the closer of the future, well he has a lot to prove before he can be that.
