Here's one of the reasons they say that no lead is safe at Wrigley Field. the Cubs have the Phillies down 12-1, bombing Steve Carlton in a seven run second inning. but rick Reuschel can't hold the lead, and the Cubs fall behind 15-13 as the Phillies score 11 times in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings. The Cubs rally to tie the game at 15-15 in the bottom of hte 9th, only to see the Phillies score three more times in the top of the 10th on Mike Schmidt's fourth home run and eighth RBI. A rally in the bottom of the 10th falls short, the Phillies have an 18-16 victory, and the Cubs tha the NL record for the largest blown lead.

1974
From themost unexpected of sources....Newly acquired catcher George Mitterwald introduces himself to the Wrigley Faithful with a monster day, hitting a double and three homers, including a first inning grand slam, and knocks in 8 runs as the Cubs crush the Pirates 18-9. Somehow he'll finish the season with only 7 home runs and 28 RBIs.

1954
With the wind blowing out at Wrigley, Chicago outslugs the Cardinals 23-13, the 36 runs marking the third highest scoring Cubs game of the 20th Century. Randy Jackson provides the game's highlight by hitting a home run off the third floor of a building on Waveland Ave

2006: This was the last time the Cubs played a 9 inning game in under two hours on the road....with one hour and 59 minutes at LA Dodgers

2004
Reds3, cubs 2
Kerry Wood loses a 2-1 lead-and his temper-in the ninth inning when he thinks he is getting squeezed by home plate umpire Eric Cooper. Dusty Bakers comes out to pull him after 131 pitches, but it's too late. Wood goes postal on Cooper and gets tossed, then throws a helmet out of the duguout.

1951: Prior to Cubs' home-opening 8-3 win vs. Cincinnati, Sam Snead becomes the first swinger ever to hit the centerfield scoreboard-albeit with a golf ball.

*Note, I was at the game in 2004 sitting in the 200 section behind home plate, and you could read Kerry's lips from where I was sitting! He was LIVID!

Eric Cooper was squeezing him at the plate. It was a very cold day in April, a game against the reds. In the 9th inning, the Cubs had the lead. Twice, Wood thought he had struck out the batters (which led to the tying run). Baker came out to get Wood, and as both Barrett and Baker were walking out to the mound, Wood began yelling at the Umpire... the umpire said something back and Wood charged at him just as Barrett jumped in between them and held Wood back. Dusty finally walked him back to the dugout and Wood threw batting helmets out onto the field. Here are some of the pictures I took!
