His first Major League HR! He's having a memorable night along with the triple he had earlier. I'll bet Carlyle wasn't expecting that! :D

ah, so many middle infielders! derosa, izzy, theriot, fontenot, cedeno, epatt (who is playing left for iowa now, just as well probably). good thing about fontenot is that he has good power, unlike theriot for example.
its great to see the bit-part players doing their jobs well when they get the chance.

Yeah, great to see him kill a great (and game determining) scoring chance with the bags juiced and nobody out...guess he is a typical Cub scrub.

HE scorched the ball to the 3b that turned into the dp. It was the worst thing possible, but he did hit it hard. If he hits it two feet to either side its a base clearing double more than likely. I dont fault him for that AB.

Didn't look to me like that ball was really scorched...routine DP ground ball...regardless he needed to get that ball in the air to the outfield...like the Cubs do 90% of the time when nobody is on base.

I totally agree- the double play in that situation was the worst thing that could have happened. In saying that though, you are talking about a left handed hitter thats 5'8' tops with good speed. He is trained to hit the ball on the ground. A flyball would have been nice, but so would have been a base clearing double. Remember the DP was a 5-2-3 dp- that means 3rd to C to 1st. The corners were in. He had to hit the ball good for that to happen or he would beaten it out. Its not like he bounced back to the piitcher or rolled over an outside pitch and hit into a 4-6-3- which would have been a better outcome because it would have scored a run. Ill take his triple and homer for the night- if you wanna pick on somebody go with DLee and his fine ABs tonight.

I'm not picking on the dude as he is on his way back to the minors shortly...but it is yet another example of a non clutch hitting Cub player...but he is a professional ball player who should be able to hit a fly ball when he wants to...midget or not.

I said it would have been nice to hit a flyball. Lets play what if- Lets say he does hit a fly ball - scores the runner on third the others stay put. 1ST and 2nd, 1 out Izzy at the plate followed by Pagan. Odds are things would not have happened the way they did, but since we are playing what ifs - they both grounded out. So now we are winning 5-2. The Braves scored 3 to win 5-4. They had plenty of pen left where we were down to Eyre and Demps.
As long as we are on the what ifs- what if Barrett actually got his head out of his butt and learned to run the bases better and block balls in the dirt. How many got passed him last night -3???.
Another what if- What if our great supposed manager would have went with Eyre in the eighth to face a swithhitting Saltamacchia, a LH thorman, a LH willie Harris and Kelly Johnson. I dont care if his era is 50 - he is paid to get LHs out.

Ball game is played a lot differently with a 3 run lead...Dempster could have been saved for the 9th as usual instead of being run out in the 8th where in the back of his mind he was no doubt saving himself for a longer outing.
Like it or not that bad AB by the rook was the key point of the game.
Barrett had no chance to block that WP by Dumpster.

Im not just talking about the final wild pitch. More balls hit the backstop with him catching than anyone else in the league. I cant remember the last time he threw a baserunner out- now that can partially be blamed on the pitcher. I dont need to get started on his calling pitches either. Bottom line- he has played like garbage this year behind the dish and running the bases.

True...but MB is one of the few gamers on the team...plus he usually is their best clutch hitter...having a rough go this year.

I have said that all year - he plays as hard as he can and he tries to be a leader. I have no gripes on how he approaches the game. MB is hard nosed and is somebody we need, because he like Theriot is what you said - a gamer

I agree, for somebody that worked with Jody Davis in the off season Barrett has not shown any improvement at all behind the plate. He may have even gotten worse!!

A lot of our pitching staff have very long approaches to the plate, allowing big jumps from the start. Not that Barrett doesn't deserve his share of blame, but I have to put some of the problem on the pitchers as well.

Thats what I was thinking! I bet Jody's embarrassed. :o
I was hoping that Fontenot would punch Renteria after he ran him over, but then I was glad that he didn't because then he would be suspended.
