Why is Jim spending like a drunken sailor now and not last year? Maybe he knew Dusty couldn't do anything with them anyway. Maybe it's because Hendry knows his job's in jeopardy if the Cubs don't improve. Maybe the Cubs management is making the Cubs better so they can get more money in a sale. It's interesting to think about the timming.

There's speculation that it's because McPhail is gone so Jimbo has more room to do the things he wants now. Sounds reasonable. I'm sure a substantial increase in payroll has helped a little too! ;)

I think it's mostly because McPhail left

It might be alot on Dusty, but I think Hendry has now realized that he is sick of losing, and is now deciding to spend money. Maybe he is sick of people ranting on about how we suck and how he doesn't make moves.

Yeah, no kidding.
Jimbo probably has a lot more control now as to what moves/decisions he makes.

The point is another year is gone and its time to get this team in order. I am loving this and i cannot wait for the season to start.

There's a lot of speculation going around. Some people attribute it to the resignation of McPhail. Cubs fans believe for whatever reason that he was holding Hendry back and that he had the final say in every decision. Others say it's because the Trib is up for sale. Personally, I couldn't care less. It's about time, and hopefully the bigger spending will get us in the playoffs.
