I dont understand the Giants. They have very good starting pitching it seems. They are short in the pen as are most teams. Their lineup lacks power but it is really not that bad. I mean Roberts , Vizguel, and definately Winn are pests. This Lewis guy looks like a really good young player. Molina, Klesko, and Feliz are pretty good. We all know about Bonds. Rich Aurilla is a grizzled vet that just gets the job done. They hit .248 as a team and have the worst record in baseball. Im not saying they should contend and maybe these guys are just now getting hot- Roberts and Vizguel- they have not had their normal seasons- but they should be better than what they are.

Just think about this. If we sweep the D-Backs and the Brewers get swept, were a 1/2 game back Monday!!! I would take 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 because its not likely to happen :D .

We have to be happy with anything, Neifi. Right now I'm thrilled, listening to people here in AZ! I'll be watching the news in half an hour to hear the sports reports, and I'll be laughing the whole time! :D Hopefully the whole weekend will go like this.

Its funny about the Brewers. I watch them alot because they are who we are chasing. They are feeling the heat of the Cubs and I think they know its just a matter of time. I dont no how many of you watch Nascar, but it kind of reminds me of a driver who finally passes the guy in first and then checks out- drives off and leaves them. But as well as we have played, they are pretty close to our record over the past whatever games. It would not surpriseme if both the Cubs and the Brewers made the playoffs.

That would be a big accomplishment in the WEEK NL CENTRAL. This division was written off at the start of the season and I think it would be funny if the wild card came out of the Central just to prove people like Joe Morgan wrong.

I do think that WHEN we overtake the Brewers, it will do a lot of damage to their confidence and won't be as challenging as it is right now.
One more thing to keep in mind, we will have an extra game than the Brew Crew this coming week when we have that make up double header in St. Louis, and that could help us a lot in the standings, too!

Ryno are you sure that is this weekend? I was thinking that was scheduled for the September series in STL. I may be wrong but I can remember wondering why they were waiting until September when we face them before then.

This is truely great - I got so involved with my work today that I forgot to listen to the Brewers game tonight and when I tuned into Fogpog and saw this thread I was delighted !
I would to like to take a moment or two right now and say how refreshing it is that this classic and wonderful baseball race involves the Cubbies and the Brewers. Maybe I am naive (sp?) and wrong but it just doesn't seem like there is the genuine animosity with the Brewers and their fans like with Houston and the River City Rats. It's ugly with those two - not as unpleasant as the Sox , but ugly.
I sincerely hope Milwaukee gets into the post-season - they very much deserve it on many levels. I'm cheering for them to be there - behind the Cubs - but there.
This is prompted by a quick visit to the Milwaukee official board just to gauge their reaction and opinions and I ran into a thread by a Houston fan cheering Milwaukee on TO KEEP THE CUBS FROM WINNING ! That stuff makes me sick and is why I rarely go to the official boards anymore and am so thankful for Fogpog and the likes.
Boy I hate that krap - Milwaukee fans are very classy by comparison. I hope they are checking the wild card standings - they'll need to soon.
Did you know the Cubs are winning better than 2 out of 3 since at least June 1 when they were 22 - 30 ? We're what now - 51 - 44 ? That's 29 and 14 since June 1. Cool beans.

Great post, Skullkey! The fact that it is a "race" is so awesome. When a team runs away with it, it makes for a very boring season. Scoreboard watching is awesome (even in July). Remember back to 2003 when we had the double header against the Pirates...Neck and neck with Houston. I remember hearing the roar of the crowd on the radio when the final score was posted on Wrigley's scoreboard that the Brewers had beat Houston that put us in a tie for first in the division. Now, not saying I want it to come down to that final day of the regular season, but that made for some pretty exciting times.
I do agree with your opinion on Brewer's fans. And I am sooooo glad that the race is between us and the Brewers and not us and the Cardinals.
So, on that note, with less than 12 hours before our boys take the field again to take on the D-backs again, lets sit back and enjoy the fact that we are in the race and that we have one helluva team that is beating the odds and shutting up the nay-sayers that wrote these boys off in April.

Heather, you put it best. Of course, proving the doubters and naysayers wrong just makes the Cubs' 2007 World Series championship that much sweeter! :D

They only thing that we have to worry about with the Brewers is that even though the Cubs have a pretty easy schedule for the 2nd half (most of our games are at home and against sub .500 teams) they have a schedule just as easy. I think the series against them in late August (which I'm going to the first game of) is gonna be pretty important.

I agree with SkullKey. I believe it was before the 97 season that Selig decided to go with three divisions in each league, and move the Brewers to the NL central. I was all for the move, being a lifelong Cub fan that has spent the last 20 years living in Fond du Lac, Wi. It has become a very competitive, yet friendly rivalry. You can go to see the Cubs in Milwaukee, and get treated with respect.
I was listening to the Brewers game at work on Friday night. When it looked like the Giants had things pretty well in hand, I printed a little message from my computer to one of my co-workers (Brewer fan). It went something like this:
-2 1/2
Can you feel the heat?
I taped it to the screen on his computer so he could see it when he punched out for the day. I must have struck a nerve, because when I gathered up my tools to put them in my toolbox, There was a message taped to my toolbox that said: F**k the heat and the Cubs. I don't think he had much of a sense of humor.

This was the first time I think I ever rooted for the Giants (other than when they play the Cards).

I don't think the Brewers are hitting the panic button yet. They have played well after the break and have pretty much the same strength of schedual as we do. Now when they lose 4 in a row and we are up by 1 game then they'll be worried.

I'm listening to the Brewers game right now on mlb.com.... and it looks like we are going to be in good shape today as the Giants are winning 3-0 going into the 9th. The brewers offense has been very sleepy today....
Interesting note: on Bond's last at bat, he was booed when he came to the plate, and an even bigger boo came out of the crowd when the Brewers decided to intentionally walk him.

update: Giants are up 8-0 going into the bottom of the 9th. the brewers bullpen just fell apart. :)
I think it is safe to say we are going to stay 2.5 games back.

They didn't just lose...they got shut out and shut down. Their bullpen totally fell apart in the late innings.
