The Cubs open their final West Coast road trip of the season Tuesday night in San Francisco, as Jason Marquis faces off against Tim Lincecum and the Giants.
The Cubs are coming off a rain-shortened three-game series in which they won two of three against the St. Louis Cardinals. Sunday night's contest between the two teams was postponed due to rain, and no makeup date has been scheduled.
The Cubs are tied with the Brewers for the National League Central lead, while the Giants find themselves last in the NL West, but winners of five straight. The Cubs took three of four from San Francisco July 16-19 in Chicago, and are looking to win the season series for the second time in three years.
Marquis has not faced the Giants this season but is 3-0 with a 2.92 ERA in four career appearances, three starts, against them. He last faced the Giants in San Francisco on May 23, 2006, giving up five runs on six hits over 8 1/3 innings to pick up the victory. Marquis will have to find a way to deal with Barry Bonds, who is batting .500 (5-for-10) with two home runs against the right-hander.
The Giants will open the series behind Lincecum, who did not get a decision in a 3-2 loss to the Cubs on July 16 at Wrigley.
Rich Hill will start against Barry Zito on Wednesday. Hill gave up two runs over eight innings against Lincecum and the Giants on July 16 for the win. Carlos Zambrano, who started Sunday's game before it was postponed, will face Matt Cain in the series finale.
The Cubs are 14-3-2 in series this season when winning the first game, but are only 2-17-2 after losing the opener. After San Francisco, they will travel to NL West-leading Arizona for three before returning to Chicago for a 10-game homestand.
"It will be a tough little trip," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "San Francisco's starting to score some runs, and Arizona's played awfully well."
Pitching matchup
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w224/ryno4ever/jm.jpg
CHC: RHP Jason Marquis (10-7, 4.25 ERA)
Marquis is coming off a win over the Reds in which he gave up four runs on seven hits and four walks over six innings. He had one bad inning, but the Cubs helped with an offensive outburst in a 12-4 win. Marquis was 3-10 in the second half last year but appears unlikely to repeat that. He's reached double-digit victories for the fourth straight year.
SF: RHP Tim Lincecum (7-3, 3.95 ERA)
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w224/ryno4ever/linecum.jpg
San Francisco pulled out another win behind Lincecum in his last start against the Braves. The young ace lasted only five innings and gave up three earned runs, but received plenty of run support in a 9-3 victory. Lincecum struggled through a 35-pitch first inning, in which he gave up two runs, but looked smooth through the rest of his start. It was the first time Lincecum hasn't reached six innings since June 19, but he still earned the win. The Giants have won seven of Lincecum's past 10 outings.
Players to watch
Derrek Lee needs to have a better road trip than his last one. During the Cubs' seven-game trip to Houston and Colorado from Aug. 6-12, Lee batted .148. He has, however, reached base safely in 30 of his last 34 games, dating back to July 6. Aramis Ramirez was 6-for-13 against the Giants earlier this season.

That's how it will be. There will be thousands of Cubs fans all in jerseys or other Cubs gear! It's weird because there will some D'backs fans in their gear, but a lot of them just wear their 'everyday' clothes. Also, this series will be one of the few sellouts for Chase Field this season.

Of course they aren't. The D-Backs haven't had enough time as a franchise to establish a nationwide fanbase that the Cubs have. (Of course, most of the Cubs games during the early days of cable on WGN helped a lot.)

As my browser crashed, the pinch hitter chops one to DeRosa to end the game. Cubs win! Cubs win! No ground gained by Milwaukee or St. Louis!

My brother and sister in law were over here the other night and my son and I were watching the game, come two outs in the top of the ninth inning (at home), and my son and I both stood up! My brother and sis in law looked at us like we were crazy and asked what we were doing. My son looked at them and said "Duh... the Cubs have one more out to get a win! You always have to stand up and then sing Go Cubs Go!" My brother accused me of child abuse in the form of brain washing right then and there! (He's not a big baseball fan!)

Totals for the game, Cubs had five runs on seven hits, no errors, four left on base. The winning pitcher was Scott Eyre, he improves to 1-1. The Giants had one run on three hits, no errors, eight left on base. The hard-luck loser was Tim Lincecum, he's now 7-4. Lincecum was dominant for eight innings, but he gave up three straight hits to start the ninth, and all three proved to be his downfall. Jason Marquis gets off the hook after giving up just one run on three hits and five walks. He struck out five, and his ERA improves to 4.12. The game was witnessed by 41,242, and was played in 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Tell your brother to get a clue! Baseball isn't child abuse! It's child enrichment. :D

That's why you don't give up on this team anymore.

Well, the Diamondbacks scored two in the bottom of the ninth, but the Brewers ended up winning, 7-4. At least we're still in a fraction of a percentage point lead.

Looking at the SportsNite replay, it definately looks like something pushed that grounder past Durham and guided Lee around Molina. Hmm...

What makes this that much better is we have seen how this team responds to wins like this. They tend to come in bunches and this could lead us through a tough road trip with the winning attitude. This could be the last hot streak to end the season :)

Around the 7th I was ready to fall asleep. Its now 1:00 A.M., after a dramatic ninth I am wide awake and I have to be up at 7 to take my Daughter to school for the first time. Can anyone say allnighter?:D

I'm in the same boat, Sheff! But, I also don't have to work tomorrow, so as soon as I drop him off at school, I can crawl back into bed for awhile!

Patience with the Grasshopper - he has much to learn.
My Father - a mental health professional - used to literally try to "cure" me of my Cubs "affliction". It didn't take. I thank God.
Goodnight to everyone - what a satisfying victory !
I think this is just about the most pleasureable of all the 44 or so seasons I have followed Cubs baseball.. Quite frankly I trhink Fogpog is a major part of that - plus the remarkable achievements of this team: to a large degree they have "kicked" the loser mind-set out the door. I acknowledge Management as major contributors. And as I have said before, Lou Piniella is on a mission; he is on his way to Manager of the Year in my opinion. (LaRussa is doing a heck of a job too. I just hope he loses in the end. He will.)

SkullKey:
I have to agree with you that management has been responsible for the shedding of the loser mentality of this club. I don't know what past managers and general managers and club presidents have done over the years, but when Lou came in and said he doesn't believe in curses, that was the first step to getting this team over the 98-year funk we've seen so far.

I have to agree there, Skullkey! It is so nice to have other people with the same passion to talk to before, during, and after the games. People who share the same emotions...and emotional breakdowns, at times...as I do.
BTW....I love your Retardinal avitar!

I have to agree with both of you. It's great to be able to talk to people who share the same passion for the Cubs. No one in my household even likes baseball to begin with and my extended family consists of D'backs and Padres fans. So, without fogpog I'd be on my own here! :(
