Is is just me or is Steve Stone annoying and condescending? Every time he's on 670 (White Sox Central BTW)I want to hang myself. He just can't help ripping into Hendry or the front office. Before they forced him out I loved listining to him on WGN during games but in light of his comments since I really lost all respect for that a**. The guy had a crappy MLB career until his 2nd to last season so what the hell does he know that Peter Gammons doesn't (or any baseball hack for that matter)?

I have always called him Mr. Knowledge. I really never liked him because he thought he knew EVERYTHING about the Cubs (he only pitched 3 years for the Cubs going 23-20) many times Harry would talk just to shut him up. I know what your talking about him on the Score, I just turn it off because you know the Cubs will do nothing right in his eyes.

I liked Stone when he was on TV. A little of a know it all, and is outspoken, but that's what makes him funny. I think he's bitter toward the Cubs for getting fired which I don't blame him. He wasn't too far off base in his comments toward the FO.
Keith Hernandez is like that here in NYC. He says some real stupid stuff sometimes, and it's always funny when he & Tom Seaver will argue, and they start pulling out their baseball resumés. It's ntertaining when I'm forced to watch a Mets game.
Don't get me started on Peter Gammons. If there was ever an overrated "expert" on baseball. He has mastered stating the obvious with authority. He might be remotely okay if he could hide his undying love for the Red Sox while reporting.

Well here is a perfect example of typical posts made on other boards I have been on. The sooner you realize that everyone is entitled to an opinion you will be better off. He was voicing his opinion which it then opens it up for discussion but to downgrade someone because of their opinion is actually the biggest homer move so you may want to look in the mirror and next time you post keep it simple when somebody is voicing and opinion and don't take it to heart and try to make an argument out of it cause that isn't the type of board this has been nor is it the type of board any of us want it to be.

I love listening to Steve Stone.. because he knows so much. If you ever watch him on sunday night baseball or any time he gets to do a game on espn, the dude knows his schtick. It's pretty incredible how he always seems to know the next pitch, the next move, like he's in the managers heads.

Whats a Tribune Homer? Just wanna know, never heard of that. Oh and Hendry just signed Soriano. Oh and Stone is far from right ever.

Stone tries to act like the two tools on 670, Boers and Bernstein. I didn't mind him as much when he was doing the Cub games.
If he wants to trash the Cubs, let him trash the Cubs. It just makes him look like an idiot.

I enjoyed it when he was doing Cubs games but what an idiot he is to stoop to the level that he has, It has really made me despise him.

Could not agree with you more. It was a sad day when I found out he and the cubs were separating.

I'm not sure but he started acting that way when he started working for 670...he just all of a sudden became an ***.

His ego was hurt when both he and Chip got dumped. Now he is just bitter and Chip left him and all he has left is "HIS EGO".

I have always liked Stone and his criticism of Cubs and Cubs management is justified. The Cubs were 5 outs away from going to the World Series. In 2004, they won one more game than the previous year, yet when the wheels fell off, the Cubs blamed everyone but themselves for their failure. Stone was blamed. How can a broadcaster win or lose a game? I can't stand B & B because they rant about being gay. To me it's not funny or entertaining.
I don't think Stone has said anything out of line concerning the Cubs. They won 66 games and with the exception of Murton and Ramirez, not one player changed their approach..."Let's swing at every pitch and hope we hit it and let's not walk because we have to be aggressive and lose games." I'm still trying to figure out what Stone has said that isn't true.

I grew up listening to Stoney and was pretty mad when he left. I always like catching the games he calls for ESPN. It took quite a while to get used to Len and Bob. Stoney was the one constant thing about the Cubs for a long time and it hasn't felt the same since.

Stone isn't anti-Cub. I think he's no more critical now than he was when he was with the Cubs. He was right on when he said Ramirez was dogging it. We find out later that Baker was okay with his guys not hustling out grounders. He has called Lee the best all around first baserman in baseball. I listen to him all the time and I don't get that he;s negative on the Cubs.

I grew up listening to Harry and Stoney, they were awesome, and it was always a bit between the two of them,Stoney's problem was with the front office and certain players, like Alou and Kent Mercker, they did not like the truthful comments Stoney made, and after that Dusty just let it get over blown, and at the time the front office let it get way out of hand, my opinion is that he still loves Cubs and the most of all,Cubbie fans everywhere.

The story I hear is Chip and Mercker were friends from Kent's playing days in ATL, and Mercker called the booth to rib Chip for his comments on Oswalt (since he was the one that made them). Stone pretty much interjected himself into this.
At the end of the season after Chip/Stone announced they were leaving, Chip came down to the field and shook hands with all the players. Stone didn't.
Stone's biggest card was that he knew how to play to the Cubs fans. Thank God the Cub fans didn't get to see what Stone would have done to the ballclub, especially his brilliant idea to trade Aramis Ramierz to LAD for Ceasar Izturis.

Then there was an argument on a flight where Mercker went crazy on Stoney for his comments and Dusty and others did not do anything about it.

First of all, from all reports Mercker did not go crazy, he simply asked Stone why he went to the press over the conversation Kent had with his friend Chip.
And if you don't care that Stone went to the press with all these stories, you shouldn't care if Dusty didn't intervene.
There's a reason Stone doesn't have a GM or managing job. And for all the years Stone was a good part of the Cubs broadcasting team with Harry, the chip on his shoulder for being passed over for Cubs scouting/management positions that he has shown really took him down a couple of nothces in my book.
Like I said, he plays the Cubs fans well.
Personally, I prefer Bob Brenley to the last couple of years Stone was here.

So, basically what everyone is saying on here is that they need everyone to sugar coat everything for them and pat them on the back and tell them everything is going to be ok. Seriously? I honestly (and write this down as the one and only time) have to agree with HeyHey. Stoney usually tells it like it is whether you want to hear it or not. If you don't like it, then don't listen to it. I don't like the White Sox announcers (excluding Stone), so I don't listen to them. I don't like ESPN, so I don't watch it. I like Pat and Ron over Bob and Len, but I would rather watch the game than listen to it, so I make ammends. I haven't listened to the Score for a couple of months because they are remodeling our office and I have been stuffed into a big office with several co-workers one of which is my CFO, so I can't subject them to Chicago Sports Radio, so I don't know if maybe Stone has totally flown off his rocker since I last heard him. I doubt it, though. I don't always agree with him, but for the most part he calls it like he sees it and it isn't always pretty. Hell, every time I hear him half way through the season when the Cubs are playing like crap, he is always saying how they will come out of it and this guy will start hitting or this guy will get out of his funk or whatever. But, whatever. He bashed Hendry. Let's burn him at the stake. I'm sorry. What has Hendry EVER done? Won a division or two? Brought in a few free agents? Got rid of Dusty? Until he wins a World Series for us, he is nothing...

NO ,Mercker went crazy on Stoney on a flight,I remember watching the 10:00 pm news ,later they sugar coated it,Stoney says it how it is,and nobodty was looking at themselves when we lost 2003,blaming Bartman, blaming Stoney for his comments. He made comments how they were using Prior and Woody way too much,he said that Prior was snapping his elbow, guess what ,he was right, don't tell me I don't care this and don't care that,I've been a Cub fan for 34 years,I don't want anyone to tell me I don't care. All I want to hear is the truth, most of those years Cubs front office were giving us Cub fan nothing but BS ,and sounds like you fell for it man.................................."YOU WAN'T THE TRUTH,YOU CAN"T HANDLE THE TRUTH!".................................................. .................................................. ................................................ http://geocities.com/weese66/Taz2.gif

Steve Stone will never be a loved color man . Len and Bob will be more loved and regarded than Stone will ever be. Stone is not and will never be considered an " Every Man " as all great broadcasters are seen . Bob with his talk of fishing and kids and wife issues will endure himself to fans more than Stone's down talking to everyone .

I'll take Stoney over grandstanders such as Len and Chip any day of the week! The man knows his baseball, fair & square-good & bad-
Tell it like it is!
Why the need to "massage" the ego's of grown, wealthy athletes? The bridges he may have burned in his past are not by people in posistion to hire him anyway.Don't sweat the small stuff, miss ya Steve!
