Lineup preview:

Geovany Soto will catch one game of Saturday's doubleheader, but Piniella wouldn't say if he would rest anyone else besides Jason Kendall. "We're going to stay as constant as we possibly can," he said. "The people who got us here are the people who are going to play."

Welcome! Enjoy! I'm hoping to be on for part of the first game. And maybe the end of the second game.

You are a real trooper Heather. I will be watching the play-by-play in you're absense. But you are doing the right thing. Friends come first.

Just a little quote from Ernie Banks (Mr. Cub), 'It's a great day for a ballgame; let's play two!' Let's hope we can win these two! :)

Lineup changes for the first game.... Soto will be behind the plate, Aramis is getting the afternoon off (for now) and DeRosa will be at third, with Fontenot at second. Aramis will be available if needed.

Lou sounds as if he has a pretty nasty cold! He was just on Ron's pregame show. I'll be able to be on for a little bit...but will have to cut it short when I have to get going to this wedding.

Looks like everyone has been busy watching the game instead of posting on the game thread!:D (I didn't get much sleep last night and ended up dozing between the 2nd and the 8th, all the while hearing the score in my sleep, but awoke in time for the go ahead two-run HR).

The Cards scored 2 in the 1st inning, the Cubs scored 1 in the 2nd and the score stayed at 2-1 Cards, until the 8th.

Soriano hit a two-run HR in the 8th to give the Cubs the advantage! :D

Cubs leading by a run 3-2.

9th inning
It's nail-biter time again, as Ryan Dempster is coming in to get the save in the ninth inning.

Strikes out Branyan--two to go, Ryan!

Schumaker flies out to Soriano--two down!

Chris Duncan comes in to PH--Demp strikes him out!

CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN!

Redbirds, we proudly present you with your 9th loss in a row! Come back in 4 hours and we'll hand you #10!

Soriano delivers win in Game 1
Two-run shot takes starter Lilly off the hook as Cubs rally
By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com

ST. LOUIS -- Alfonso Soriano smacked a two-run homer in the eighth inning on Saturday to power the Cubs to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the first game of a day-night doubleheader for their fourth straight win.

The Cubs now have a two-game lead in the National League Central Division over the Milwaukee Brewers, who were to play host to Cincinnati on Saturday night.

Trailing 2-1 in the eighth against Ryan Franklin (4-4), pinch-hitter Cliff Floyd walked to lead off and was lifted for pinch-runner Sam Fuld. Soriano connected on a 3-2 pitch for his fourth career homer off Franklin. Soriano has four homers in his last eight games, and 26 for the season.

Kerry Wood (1-1) picked up the win, pitching one inning of relief in front of 45,918, the largest crowd of the season at Busch Stadium, which included quite a few Cub fans. It was Wood's first "W" since May 29, 2006.

Chicago starter Ted Lilly did not get a decision, giving up two runs on four hits -- two in the first and two in the fourth -- and striking out four over six innings. Lilly had beaten the Cardinals, 12-3, on Monday in a makeup game, and this was his fourth quality start in five outings against St. Louis.

St. Louis' Braden Looper was in line for the win, striking out five over seven innings. He leads the Majors with a 1.69 ERA in day games, giving up 12 earned runs over 64 innings this season.

With two outs in the Cardinals' first, Albert Pujols singled and Ryan Ludwick walked, and both scored on Jim Edmonds' double, which right fielder Daryle Ward had a tough time tracking down. Mark DeRosa walked to lead off the Chicago second, reached third on rookie Geovany Soto's double and scored on Mike Fontenot's sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.

Left-hander Sean Marshall was slated to start Game 2 for the Cubs against Joel Pineiro. The two teams were playing a doubleheader to make up for the April 29 game, which was postponed because of the death of Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock.
