View Full Version : Why Wood and Prior are alway hurt

There hurt for 5 reasons in my mind (IMO they didnt use riods to some of you guys who think they did)
1. They both pitched alot in college
2. Dusty rode them into the ground
3. Woods mechanics
4.Priors strange injurys (giles ran into him and that line drive off the elbow)
5. Lots of breaking pitched (im not totally sold on this theory but hey)
I love the 2 and if we got Prior making 30 starts plus the starters Hendry is going after then we would win 100+ games. Also Dempster needs to the long man IMO and Wood needs be our closer this year. Who knows he could be the next Mariano Rivera for all we know.

I don't like Baker, but he had nothing to do with the problems with there health. Wood was damaged goods long before Dusty was even here, and Prior is just a Hypochondriac wimp. He has had 3 bouts of food poisining/fleu that caused him multi week shut-downs from pitching. I truly believe Prior was using steroids and because of the testing he filtered it out of his system by being hurt. You don't get constant monitor by doctors and the best in the world like Dr. James Andrews and all of a sudden after 3 years it's "arm looseness". Baker did a terrible job and his inibility to inforce the players and his willingness to spite the media even at the cost of our team is why he was horrible not Wood and Prior. Wood was just not built to be a starter, heck most people aren't. Guys like Clemens or Maddux are rare when it comes to health, atleast Wood would always give 100% even when hurt and not B!tch out like Martha Prior lol.

I'm with you 100%. A combo of excessive innings with sloppy mechanics will inevitably lead to arm problems. I think Wood could be a lights out closer, and it will help him get arm strength back. I'm not sure about Prior. Ou can only hoe for the best
I don't think you cab compre them with Maddux. They are completely differnt types of pitchers. Maddux is control pitcher who walks no one while prior and Wood rely on speed, and have more walks. Maddux might (well back a few years ago), been able to throw equal innings, but threw a ton less pitches.

Can I chip in a thought! Kerry Wood was drafted right out of High School and did not pitch in college!

I don't think Kerry Wood is physically capable, or rather the risk of this is too great, of being the closer, and pitching in 50/60-odd games a season: those are Bob Howry numbers and Wood isn't built for it (yet). Give him more time, hopefully, eventually he'll close (and I too think he could be lights-out).
According to absolutely everything I've read, Prior HATED playing for Baker. His Dad has ranted about his "abuse" of pitchers for the last two years at least (annoying, I can't link this off the top of my head, but it's out there). I don't think he's a hypochondriac, but he has maintained a negative outlook and his lack of offseason work is extremely disappointing. I think working for Lou (or, a new manager in general) will give him a boost and he will be back to something resembling his old self. One expression though: last chance saloon.

Oh yeah you are correct. I speaking more of Prior at Southern Cal and not to mention all the international games.

Oh and can everyone stop calling Prior a sissy and all this crap. Its getting old, and the guy is not having fun not starting after his 2003 season. So just stop the "Hypochondriac wimp" talk. How would you feel knowing your a great pitcher but were always hit with somthing

I think its time to move on.Resigning Wood is an afterthought at best.Prior is still youg enough to turn it around. If he does fine but you can't depend on them.Been down that road.If they come through thats a bonus otherwise we need to let that horse die.

what's getting old is Prior, he is a wimp and is a sissy, his father is like the controlling pagent/little league obsessive parent. Kerry Wood cost this franchise boatloads but he always gave it his all and he always was first to point out frustration and be "REAL" with the fans. I remember in the NLCS in game 7 when we lost they asked him how he felt and he said you'll have to excuse me I just went out there and choked. Not to mention he could have bailed, but felt an obligation to try and make it work here. I'm not a Prior basher I never post about him, but if you think a lot of this crap isn't fishy or that there hasn't been times where he could have given more heart or soul into his off-season regimen or Milked his down town with a tum tum ache then I have ocean front property in Montana for you.

I guess it's a good thing that none of these modern pitchers pitched before 1980. What would Prior's dad have to say about Leo or Alston or John McGraw or Connie Mack? Nolan Ryan would strikeout more guys in a season than anyone. He would also walk more guys than anyone. Granted, not everyone can throw 160 pitches a game. But I hate pitch counts. You wind up bringing in a guy who is not as good as the guy you're taking out. I keep hearing how modern players are in better shape and have better medical care. If that's true, why are more players going on the DL?

Ryan was one of te exceptions to the rule, but he also has perfect mechanics. He pitched from his legs. Kofax on theother hand didn't.
You can't compare McGraw, Mack, or even Matthewson to the players of today. They played in the dead ball era, and while they threw a ton of innings they threw less pitches.
