Just wondering if anyone has had the ice storm yet? It hasn't hit here yet, but the news keeps breaking in with updates to get people prepared.... telling us to get emergency kits together,etc...and to expect lots of widespread power outages...which really is NOT cool for me, as my house is electric heat! There is lists of cancellations already out for tomorrow (however, school is not one of those on there yet....). If anyone has been through it...is it really as bad as they are saying it's going to be????

From an email bulletin I just received:

The magnitude of ice expected to hit our area is probably only seen once or twice a decade, according to meteorologist Jim Hladik, with the Quad City Weather Service.

And my boss expects me to make it in to work tomorrow! (20 miles away... driving through open countryside?) I'm thinking it's gonna be a day off tomorrow!

Nice find Dee Lee! The worst I remember, I was in high school...it was just after christmas.... the ice was so heavy it was snapping power lines all around us... it blew the transformer right outside our house, which caught the line to the house on fire. It was the middle of the night, so it was pitch black besides the buzzing red hot wire outside swinging outside our front door. Because it was so icy, it took what seemed like forever for the fire department to get there, but there was really nothing they could even do, as they had to wait for com ed to come out to shut the power off to the line, so the fire dept. just had to sit outside our house all night to make sure the arc-ing line didn't catch the house on fire. Luckily, there was no damage, but the power company wasn't able to get there until a few hours later.

Yeah, I remember that ice storm last year. I'm just hoping to not wake up tomorrow with a mess like that on our hands again.

Here, it's supposed to be mostly snow, about 2-4 inches. As I look at the local radar now, the storm's just along I-80 and heading NE. It should get to my area sometime around dawn.

Yeah, Eric, snow I can handle. The sleet and ice is what stinks.

Steve, what part of the state are you in? I hope you're not south of I-80.

I think I'll be fine for the most part. I'm in Waterloo, so north of I-80.

I'm just not a big winter fan, period. Should probably think about moving somewhere different then, huh? :)

I'm pretty much right on i-80, so I'm dinked no matter what.

We're projected to get .25-.5 inches of ice with an additional 1-3 inches of snow...I hope I don't lose power otherwise tomorrow could be one long day.

Hey, neighbor!

Anyway, I guess we got just 4 inches or so, mostly snow, with a thin coating of ice at the beginning. Snow stopped about 12:30, but we might get a stray snow shower or flurry the rest of the night. Now, the plows can clear the streets in time for the kids to get back to school. The Cedar Valley schools let out two hours early today.

I'm just outside Chicago and we didn't even get ice because it stayed above freezing all night, so it was just water and a little bit of snow. Most of the snow that was there on the ground today was there from the morning before, and its all pretty much melted now cause its been in the mid 30's all day. All that hype for nothing.

Same here....it rained pretty good all day long, but it was too warm to freeze. EVERYTHING was closed around here....and for nothing.

I'm just glad we only got snow. The ice makes a huge mess of things. The nice thing is too is that my buddy came over unannounced and plowed my driveway for me today. Saved me a good amount of shoveling, which I'm always thankful for. ;)

My dad's friend also plowed out our driveway early this evening, too. Steve, do you watch the KWWL news? How much snow did Jeff Kennedy say we got, maybe 4 inches?

Didn't see the news, Eric, so I couldn't tell you. I did hear that they thought we would end up with 3-4 inches and that's about what it looks like.
