View Full Version : I hate to admit it but.....

I was listening to ESPN 1000 this morning, (Usually do 5-12) and Waddle and Silvey were interviewing Jay Mariotti. Now, I hate to admit it, but he made a very good point when it came to the sale of the Cubs. He said that he could see Mark Cuban buying the Cubs dispite Bud Selig's and Jerry Reinsdorf's strong dislike of him and all of their efforts to keep him out of the "good old boys" club. If Cuban makes an offer that is far and away the best offer out there, and far better then Selig's close and personal friend John Canning's offer, Sam Zell himself might step in and put up a fuss if he can not accept what would be a far better deal. Because Zell would be losing out on money if he is forced to take a lesser offer, the stock/share holders would also fail to make as much oney as they could with the best offer not being accepted. So this is basically what our hopes come down to, with Cuban owning the Cubs in place of the likely frontrunner John Canning. Hopefully Cuban does make an offer that is obviously better, and that Zell will be able to stand up to Buddy and let him know that he will take the best offer Selig and the Owners association be damned. Dont forget, the new owners of a ball team have to be voted in. But this is a very special case since it isnt really a privately owned franchise. You have share/stock holders who also want to get as much out of the sale as they possibly can.

There, I said it. I agreed with and admited that Jay Mariotti made a good point. Now I need to cleanse myself....

Actually, I don't think there are shareholders or stockholders in this deal because with the purchase by Sam Zell, he took Tribune private. He has the say in all. That's why he has every right to not sell Wrigley with the team and keep it, lease it to the Cubs, and then sell the naming rights for bundles of cash.

ok, that was where I was mistaken. I thought the shareholders in Trib Co. would want some say. I guess they were booted when Zell bought the team. But either way, he may put up a fuss if he is "forced" to take a lesser offer so Bud's guy can get the team

I am wondering why so may people find it fashionable to hate Mariotti, I am not a huge fan either, but the guy makes more good points than bad and people always get on his back for this or that. He is a columnist for a newspaper, I don't know how many people who rip on him, can say that.

But yes, I agree with his article as well.:D

I love the guy cause he is a great writer. He does what he is supposed to do. Give you the facts, something to discuss. You either agree or disagree with him. I jsut hate the guy cause he pisses me off more then anything else

I think he's a skilled writer and I think he knows that controversy sells, but when he's trying to "stir the pot" sometimes, he is a jerk to players, teams, fans, etc. He pretty much reminds me of Chicago's version of Stephen A. Smith (who has the radical viewpoints to get him his own shows, but they grow old and get cancelled). If Jay get's any more polarized with his views, I think the same will happen to him.

I just never really liked him, but he does make a good point here. Zell, being the greedy tycoon that he is, would probably pitch a fit if he can't accept the best deal out there.

Yes I agree ,thats why Fitzsimons had to resign and he cashed in about $32 million in stocks shares.

I think it is more HOW he goes about making his points known... he tends to be way over the edge with the sarcasm and negativity to prove his points.... if you have the patience and stomach to read through his toe curling sarcasm, he has many points that could be taken to heart.

Someone else just posted it and they hit it on the head, controversy sells papers. So I take this position: If anyone dislikes him that much, boycott the papers distributing his writings, instead of reading them and/or paying for them. :D
