MESA, Ariz. -- Cubs prospects Jeff Samardzija, Tyler Colvin and Jake Fox were victimized by a burglar who stole more than $10,000 from four locations over the last five months, the Arizona Republic reported on Wednesday.
Mesa police have arrested Todd Robert Smith, 44. A witness said Smith was spotted in the Cubs minor league clubhouse in Mesa on Jan. 29 and then escorted out of the building. The police report said the players, who were in town to workout, had sunglasses, gloves, credit cards, checkbooks, a cell phone and personal identification stolen from their lockers. Samardzija’s credit card was used minutes later at a nearby Wal-Mart.
Smith, who was described in the report as a "well-known transient Mesa burglary suspect,” was arrested Saturday and accused of stealing items valued at $10,465 from four locations.
Cubs pitchers and catcher report to spring training today.
What a way to start the season
