Since some people are going to start screaming for his departure from the starting rotation, I figured I would do a little research on current ERAs of great starting pitchers around baseball. Before todays game, Dempster had a better ERA (3.00) then Johan Santana (4.00) Oswalt (4.00) Webb (6.00) Blanton (7.36) Bonderman (5.54) Peavy (9.00) Ervin Santana (8.31) Rich Hill (7.04) Zito (17.18) Harden (9.00)

and im sure there are more. What do all these pitchers have in common besides a worse Spring ERA then DEMPSTER? They are all better then Dempster. Proof that good pitchers have crappy springs. And Dempster was having a real good Spring training before todays game. Dempsters Era is now 6.75 in spring. Still lower then half those pitchers. Stop over reacting.

And Dont forget, it was against the Angels who have one of the best offenses in the entire Majors.

I hope you are right, but Angels still have 6 runs,Wuertz,Wood and Lieber shut them down even though Angels have the best offense .

dude, its spring training. pitchers have bad outtings all the time. I still think that Dempster will do good once the real games start. Rich Hill has been getting knocked around, should he be pulled from the rotation?

and for the Record, Rich Hill isnt proven. He has had one full year of starts? Far from proven

" ... dont over react to Dempster's bad outting ... "

Now you tell me - I just killed the cat.

I am one who is far from convinced that Dempster will stay a starter long - or at least stay in the regular rotation. I am far from convinced he will break S.T. in the rotation. My guess right now is it's Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis and Lieber. Lieber's looking good and knows how to pitch. I think Marquis has been pitching well and will likely produce 20 good starts. I get the impression Dempster is the kind of guy who gives you 3 O.K. starts and then gives away a game. A team can generally do better than that. It's not like we have kids like Tampa has or what we had 4 or 5 years ago.

true, i just dont think that all the optimism that he built up with his first couple of starts should just be tossed with one bad outting

I'll be very honest and I don't mean to pick on the guy but I was never optimistic about Dempster as a starter. At his best with Florida he was so-so.

He was probably above average as a starter in 2000 and 2005 (in the bullpen) was also not bad, He's just not a top quality pitcher.

probably not, but he has shown that he can get the job done.

I, for one, could not agree more. Whatever happens, Demp has worked really hard and has pitched well for the most part. I'm not 100% convinced that he belongs in the starting rotation at this point, but I think he certainly deserves respect for what he has been able to accomplish thus far.

exactly what I have been trying to say.

Are you serious? When has ANYONE on this board EVER over-react about ANYTHING? That stuff never happens around here. Sheesh.

Did you sense my sarcasm? I was laying it on pretty thick.

I am not going to overreact, he pitched well today. Dero's misplay cost us.

But the jury is still out for me on whether he can sustain this level of pitching for the entire season. He hasn't pitched this many innings in a few years, and it's only the halfway point.

Dempster is probably the pleasant surprise of the year. Rich Hill would be the unpleasant surprise. I wonder what's going on with him?; other than being left-handed. What a staff we'd have with him pitching well.

Four months ago if you had just showed me the stats and performances I would have guessed it was the other way around: Hill at 10-3 and Dempster somewhere other than the Cubs 25 man roster.
