Kerry Wood-R-Cubs Mar. 19 - 1:25 pm et

Kerry Wood, who was supposed to work on back-to-back days for the first time this spring, had to be scratched from Wednesday's appearance because of back spasms.

"Look, we do have one setback with Kerry today -- his back is really, really stiff and he's not going to be able to pitch today," manager Lou Pineilla said. "It has nothing to do with his shoulder, or elbow, it's just with his back. He went to see a doctor, and hopefully we'll get him out there (Thursday) or the next day." Piniella wants Wood in the closer's role, but it's unclear if he'd hand him the role without him having pitched on back-to-back days first.

things were going to good for Wood lately... you had to know a set back was coming. Hopefully it is jsut a back issue, and hopefully he isnt sidelined long.

He dealt with this before, it had to do with the hotel bed he was sleeping on and ended up having to sleep on a board!

yea, I remember that story, but lets hope it is just a back issue

Lou got a little "testy" with the media, who did ask what I would think is a logical question:

With the cold weather in Chicago at the start of the season, what makes Piniella confident that Wood's back won't act up again? Piniella laughed, rolled his eyes and didn't immediately respond.

Asked if the cold weather was a "concern" for Wood and his sore back, Piniella replied: "If we had to be concerned about everything to be concerned about, we'd never sleep around here.

I think a lot of people who don't live in the midwest underestimate the wicked weather of the midwest! I hope Lou remembers exactly HOW cold it got last year! I remember a few games getting cancelled, and a couple even getting moved to Milwaukee to play indoors! That cold weather will play some numbers on athlete's bodies!

ah yes, that would have been the Cleveland Indians who had games moved to th BrewHouse because they were snowed out. Not due to the cold.

Here we go again, same old story. If your going to trade a pitcher he's the guy. That is if you can get anything for him.

Ummm, yeah, just reported on Chicago Tribune Live on CSN, Woody will not pitch until Saturday at the earliest. But it is "nothing serious".... they don't want him making the bus trip on Friday to aggrivate the back further.....

here we go again. Wood, you are not the closer.

Guys, I was watching SportsRise and they were talking about the car they smashed and were wondering because Woody was involved, they were hoping the back strain did not happen while he was hammering away at the car.

I heard that too. They started to bring up the "odd Cub injuries" of the past and said that when Woody leaves this earth, his body needs to be donated to science because of all of his freak injuries!

that would be fitting for his career of odd injuries

last year he fell in a hottub

What does it matter how he did this to his back? He could have fell out of the hot tub again or slipped on a banana peel for all I care. What matters is how soon hes gonna pitch again this spring because they got less than 2 weeks to get him ready, and hes still gotta pitch back-to-back days and go over 1 inning. Every time I hear that Woods hurt, I die a little more inside :( .

Thats what I was thinking. Or maybe he hurt it reclining is his lazy-boy. Or bowling. Or sneezing. Or getting run over by a goat.

It seems every single time he gets hurt, it comes right after a very positive step in his recovery. While I don't think this is that big of a deal, its Kerry Wood, and when he has so much as a cold, its headline news (Rightfully so). I can't wait for all this injury crap to be over with and see Wood shut down the side.

Maybe San diego would take him. They took Prior. I would take Maddux back for him or even Barrett.

One of JH's miscalculation on how long can Maddog can go out there and still pitch effectively, I wish we never let him go.

Same here. As far as Barrett goes, I'd rather have Kendall back.

Hendry knew Maddux could still pitch. He didnt trade him because he didnt think he could go anymore. he traded him because Maddux was in his final year of his contract, the Cubs were sucking it up, and he wanted to give maddux a shot of playing for a winner. It had nothing to do with his ability or lack there of.

Thats true, he also wanted to be closer to home.

That was Sosa - put himself on the Disabled List too. Pretty crazy; but not as crazy as my brother-in-law having to go to the emergency room after lighting his farts on fire. I loved that - he couldn't sit normally for over a week. He had to sort of lie on his side.

Who was it (not a Cub) who injured himself a couple of months ago by walking through a sliding glass door? Easier to do than it seems actually; my sister drove through one once.

haha wanting barrett back... that makes me laugh

be happy its just a stiff back (back spasms), what we need to worry about is his shoulder

if i remember correctly wood had back problems in high school as well... normaly back injuries are naturally reoccuring... i dont think we need to worry

I know it was Sosa :D. I can't remember who walked through a glass door, but I think Mike Remlinger was the one who messed up his hand in a Lazy Boy. Or was it Will Oh-Man?

Agreed. The Shoulder and elbow worry me (If he gets hurt in either place).

Wow, I didn't think he'd be back so fast. So much for EPSN reporting anything positive for our Cubs. I hope ESPN goes under.

From many accounts Maddux initiated the trade, and he should have gotten prospects from the extremely-deep LAD minor league system instead of another no-bat middle infielder that the Dodgers were pretty much looking to dump off.

This is just another minor injury that people are trying to blow out of proportion.
