I have a self-built PC, using an nForce3-A motherboard, AMD Athlon 64 processor running at 2 GHz, 512 MB DDR 400 SDRAM and two HDDs, one 120 GB, one 20 GB. It also has an ATI Raedon video card and a SoundBlaster Audigy sound card, and a DVD-ROM drive. Next thing I need to get is a second 512 MB RAM chip and a DVD+/-RW drive.

As long as you're not intermingling the 3, you're A-OK

I don't know much about computers either, I just know I have an HP with Intel Celeron processor, CD writer and 15" flat screen monitor. I'd like to get a laptop soon, so I can be mobile while I'm working, so if anyone has any suggestions--just let me know.

I am looking to build my own PC, but have no idea how.

it's very time consuming, alot of research, compaitability matching, price comparisons....i did all the shopping online and wound up building a pretty good comp. for relatively cheap. the first step is figuring out what kind of processor you want and then go from there.

Well, as i posted awhile back, I have an iMac, technically it has MAC OS X
Well, this is an Intel Based MAC, which means you can run windows on it. I put XP pro on here, and still can boot up OS X i just hold the option button and hit windows when i start my computer if I wanna run it.
Pretty interesting, and runs slick so.

I am looking at maybe getting a new pc soon and passing this one on to my son. Sounds like there are a lot of computer knowledgeable people on here. Hopefully you can answer some of my questions... Windows XP Media Center... is it all that different than Windows XP home editon? Next, I do a lot of digital photography.... what size hard drive/memory should I look into.
One more question, one of the reasons I am looking to get a new one is my cd burner won't burn cd's anymore. It will play cd's and programs... when I got to burn the cd's, it goes through the whole process and confirms the burn in complete, but when I go to play it (or pull the cd up, as a couple of them were cd's with pictures burned onto them)... the disk is blank. Any suggestions of what the problem may be?

Answer to your HD question. Well, it depends alot on how big of files your camera makes with your pictures. So it depends alot. I would probably recommend at the least 80 gig+ but thats just me. It also depends alot if you store your pictures on CD's then delete them off of your HD
Now with your cd burner, you could just install another one, or have someone do it for you. It might be the type of CD's you use. What kind? Sometimes whatever you put the CD in, depends on if it will read it or not. I have Stereos that won't read some of my burned discs, but I don't burn cd's often. I would suggest a new burner or new brand of blank cd's.
Remember all of the manufactures have Windows Vista upgrade for them. One, don't worry about Media Center edition or XP. And if your going to get a new computer, get alot of memory (aka ram) that will help a lot with your digital pictures, plus if you get Windows Vista ( i heard it sucks and they wasted 4 years of just re-styling of XP) it will take atleast more than 1 gig of RAM to run that slick and not slow. If you have questions just ask.

thanks, deeLee. I do have an external DVD burner that will burn cd's, too, I guess I am just looking for an excuse to go out and buy a new computer.
My camera, btw, is a Kodak EasyShare z7590 that takes 5 mega pixel pictures, but I have a program that can downsize the picture file once I put it on my pc. I bought an external hard drive, as well, to store all of my pictures because my computer crashed a few months ago and I lost a lot of my pictures that I hadn't had a chance to back up yet.

Actually, that sounds like a pretty good excuse to get a new computer. If you are looking at one, what are you looking at and the price range?

I had one built on hp.com...just couldn't get myself to hit the "buy" button. My house is the size of a cracker jack box... so I'm not even sure where I would set another computer up! It was right around $1100 after i put on the 19" monitor.

HP is a good brand. But have you ever thought of a Macintosh? I didn't up until about november. I looked at them, and found out we were gonna get one. MAC OS X runs nice. I have an intel mac, which means I can run windows on it, and still have mac os x....which im doing now. I have an iMac (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/61154002/wo/bL14x274IrSE2WgjKjq1RJ0PG8O/2.?p=0) and it has the latest Intel chips and a gig of ram on it. It runs quick, and no need to worry about it crashing. Plus iPhoto is awesome for digital pictures. Do you edit much (Photoshop?)
You said your house is pretty small. Have you looked at any laptops at all?
Don't just say no about the mac thing (you can if you want) :D , I hated them when we first got ours, but they are really nice. I have basically a monitor, and a power cord on my desk. W/ mouse and keyboard. So it doesn't take much space at all.

Haven't really looked into a Mac... I have an hp.com credit card and was just going to use that. If not, I may just wait until the tax return comes in and go from there. HP has free shipping right now on customizable models, so that is why I have been looking right now, I just can't decide if I want another monthly payment on something, when i really should be looking into a new car! I hate logically thinking when shopping.

Well, HP's are good. I just hate buying manufactured computers because they come with a lot of crap I don't want. This computer came with 1 gig of ram, 160 gb HD and and the new Intel duo core chip. It's a 17 inch widescreen (don't know how big you want but this is pretty big) and has iSight (built in camera) alot of USB ports, bluetooth, airport extreme (wireless internet connector) microphone. all of that for just over 1100 bucks. The monitor is the computer, it has everything in it, there is no tower. Plus it is VERY silent. I can't hear it at all. I highly recommend an iMac or MacBook, even if you love your PC. No worries about crashes :D

Thanks! I think i may wait until income tax refund time and look into that. It sounds like it may solve a lot of my issues with getting a new pc.

I had to build my computer, after shopping around at stores and online. I just didnt like any of the pc's i looked at and the one i built is much more suited to my needs...anyways DLee25 if you feel like answering another ? then i got one for you. I've got a 19" widescreen LCD monitor, the brand is proview, the problem i'm having is i purchased this monitor this past summer and it had worked fine untill the last month or so. Occasionally througout the day the monitor flickers and the colors on the screen change from light to dark, the connections on the monitor itself as well as on the back of the comp. are not loose or anything, do you have any idea what might be causing this?

I have never really heard of Proview, where did you get it? How much was it? I wouldn't trust buying a brand I don't know, it's kind of like a TV. I don't know what to tell you. Do you shut it off? Or do you let it be on screensaver 24/7.

I got it at wal-mart, 250.00. I shut it off for half the day and leave it on with the screensaver the other half when it's not in use and here lately i've just been shutting it off even with the screensaver on.
