some game notes:
With 15 wins in April and four games still to play this month, the Cubs are one victory shy of matching their most wins in this month in franchise history … Chicago posted a franchise-best 16 wins in April of 1969 … before 2008, the Cubs had previously won at least 15 games in April just three times: 2003, 2001 and 1969.
Derrek Lee has seven home runs this month, one shy of tying the Cubs all-time home run record for April … Sammy Sosa (2000 and 2002) and Lee Walls (1958) each recorded eight home runs in this particular calendar month … Lee hit seven home runs in April of 2005.
©
©
Geovany Soto has 14 RBI this month to become the second Cub rookie since 1956 to drive in at least 14 runs in March/April … Hee-Seop Choi had 14 RBI in the first month of 2003.

Apr 26th 2008, 5:05 pm
The Cubs are scheduled to face left-handed starters in all three games this series continuing with Matt Chico tonight … overall, the Cubs will have faced four lefthanders in the five games this trip … including the four lefthanders the Cubs faced on their first road trip, the Cubs will have faced eight southpaws in their first 11 road games this season … the Cubs have faced just two lefties in their 14 home games thus far. ©
The Cubs are 6-2 thus far against left-handed starters in 2008 …in 2007, the Cubs faced left-handed starters in just 43 contests, the fewest among any N.L. club, and posted a 19-24 against southpaws.

The Cubs are 13-0 when scoring at least four runs this season … the Cubs have won their first 13 games when scoring four runs or more for the first time since 1970 (13-0) … the Cubs last won more than their first 13 games when scoring four or more runs to begin a season in 1909, when they won their first 19 such contests.

Apr 26th 2008, 5:06 pm
Despite losses in their last two games, the Cubs are off to their best start since posting a 15-8 record in 1995 … in fact, the Cubs have now started 15-7 (or better) for just the fifth time in more than 70 years (1995, 1985, 1975, 1969) … the Cubs have not started a season 16-8 since 1995.
The Cubs are 15-8 this year after posting a 10-13 mark through 23 games in 2007 (10-14 through 24).

©
Including a five-game winning streak from April 5-10 and a six-game run from April 18-23, the Cubs posted a pair of five-game winning streaks (or more) within the month of April for the first time in the franchise’s 133-season history.

The Cubs last night christened their 111th ballpark with a 5-3 setback and are now 60-50 with one tie in their ballpark debuts … incidentally, the Cubs fell by a final score of 7-0 in their May 27, 1886 Swampoodle Grounds debut.

Apr 26th 2008, 5:07 pm
The Cubs have played five extra-inning games before the end of April for the first time since 2000, when they reached five extra-inning games on April 29.
©
The Cubs have won their last four extra-inning contests, all of which have been played on the road … the Cubs have won five extra-inning road games in a season only four times in franchise history (in 2004, 1978, 1955 and 1889).

Lou Piniella also reached a pair of milestones when the Cubs won their 10,000th game on Wednesday in Colorado, as the win was his 100th as manager of the Cubs … Piniella matched Joe McCarthy (1926-30) as the franchise’s 10th-fastest manager to 100 wins in club history, as Piniella and McCarthy reached their 100th wins as a Cub in their 183rd games at the helm. ©
©
Additionally, Wednesday’s victory was Piniella’s 1,619th career victory to tie Ralph Houk for 14th on the all-time managerial win list.
Piniella now has 100 wins with five different clubs (New York, Cincinnati, Seattle, Tampa Bay and Chicago) … he becomes just the fourth manager in baseball history to accomplish the feat, joining Dick Williams (six clubs), Chuck Dressen (five clubs) and John McNamara (five clubs).
