I have to say I'm getting tired of his act too...he has been practically an automatic out this whole season...and a pitiful 0-4 so far today with nary a hard ball hit...Theriot with three hits today could have got a lot more to happen with a leadoff guy that can actually get on.
I just wish the Cubs had the balls to make him do a rehab in Iowa before he came back...let him try to find something there rather than bogging down the top of the order.

A rehab assignment would have been good. I'm sick of his inability to hit a breaking ball or even take one.

No $hit.
Why do the Cubs walk around on eggshells with SorryICantTakeAPitcho?
Maybe because he still can't speak good English yet?:D
I'd send his butt to Iowa until he could show he can hit again.

problem is with the high paid stars, they dont do rehab starts often.
Did Lee do one when he came back from his broken wrist? Has Ram done any in his DL stints.
Plus, problem is, with him (and most big stars) I believe they have to ive permission in order to be sent down to the minors. Even for a rehab start

yup, he is well within his rights to refuse a rehab stint

Who's Got Options?
With Spring Training upon us, baseball fever has risen dramatically. The countdown to opening day has begun. And many players will be fighting for their baseball lives. In this report INSIDE PITCH will re-examine a rule that has major ramifications on a team's final 25-man roster. Today, we look at the oft misunderstood "Options" rule.
As the 2007 season approaches, fans will hear over and over again this sentence, "Player A has a better chance of making the opening day roster than Player B because he is out of 'Options'." So, how many "Options" does a player actually have and how does this rule work?
How It Works
When a player is originally drafted by or initally signed by a team, a clock begins to run. This clock is the first rule that a fan has to follow if they want to understand how "Options" work. The player is under the team's complete control for the first three years (four years if player signed is younger than 19 years old). If the player is not added to the 40-man roster after three years (or four years for younger players) he becomes eligible for the Rule 5 draft. This draft allows other teams to sign the player if they are willing to keep him on their major league roster or DL for the entire year. Though, if their use of the DL is limited, as he must be active for at least 90 days.
Now, once a player is added to the 40-man roster, a second clock begins. This is the "Option Years" clock. This means that when a player is on the 40-man roster, teams have the option of calling that player up to the major league team and sending him down to the minors as many times as it wishes for THREE YEARS. If a player on the 25-man major league roster (who has "Options" remaining) is never sent down to the minors in a given year, then a team retains however many "Option Years" it has left until the team has used all of them. After these three "Option Years", the player is considered to be "Out of Options" and may not be sent down without going through Waivers.
Usually when fans get confused, it is when they think that a team only has a certain number of times they can call up and send down a player in any given year, or they don't realize that the three "Option Years" do not have to be consecutive. To highlight this last point, let's use Ryan Zimmerman as an example. In 2005 Zimmerman was added to the major league roster at the same time he was added to the 40-man roster. Even though he has been on Washington's 40-man roster for two full seasons, the Nationals still have all three "Option" years left to use since they have never sent Zimmerman down to the minors.
The reason for the "Option" rule is so that players who are blocked in an organization eventually are given a chance to pursue their careers with another organization where their might be a better major league opportunity for them. Another way to look at the rule is as a protection for the player. Teams are prevented from stashing a young talent in the minors for as long as they want.
Caveats
If a player is on the 40-man roster for THREE YEARS and never put on the major league roster in that time, he gains a FOURTH "Option" year.
DL rehabilitation assignments are not counted as an "Option".
If a player is sent to the minors for less than 10-days in each stint, it is not considered an "Option".
If a player on the 40-man roster is sent to the minor leagues in spring training, it counts as an "Option".
A player with five seasons of major league service time or more (calculating MLB service time is a topic for another blog) can refuse an "Option" to the minor leagues even if the team hasn't used up its "Options". An example would be Roger Clemens (supposing he plays this season). Clemens has never been optioned to the minors. But, because he has more than five seasons of MLB experience a GM could not option him without his permission.
Also, even if a minor leaguer is not added to the 40-man roster, after six years he has the option of becoming a minor league free-agent.
The Case Of Oliver Perez
There has been much confusion in the New York media lately as to whether Mets' pitcher Oliver Perez is "Out of Options" or not. Some are even confused as to why he had any "Options" remaining last year. If one reviews the rules I have layed out, including the Caveats, then the answer is clear.
Oliver Perez is "Out of Options" beginning this season. The reason for some of the confusion is because many don't realize that 2005 didn't count as an "Option" year even though Perez pitched part of the summer for the Triple-A, Indianapolis Indians. The time he spent in the minors that year was considered part of his DL rehabilitation assignment. I have listed that as Caveat #2. So if we review Perez's flow of movement from the minors to the majors, we can see that 2002 and 2003 (where he was called up from the minors and sent down from the majors) were counted as his first TWO "Option" years. Since Perez spent no time in the minors in 2004 and the time he spent in 2005 was part of a DL rehab assignment, 2006 (when he spent much of his time in the minors after being sent down by the Pirates) was his FINAL "Option" year.
"Option Years" Rule Summary
Team's Rights
Team has three or four (if he is under 19-years old) years to add player to 40-man roster.
Once added to 40-man roster, team has THREE (in some cases FOUR) "Option Years" where they can call-up or send down players as often as they like without putting him through Waivers. These "Option Years" do not need to be used in consecutive years.
DL minor league rehabilitation assignments do not count as an "Option".
If a player spends less than 10 days in the minors during any given stint, it is not considered an "Option".
Player's Rights
Player is eligible for Rule 5 Draft if not added to 40-man roster in first three or four (if player is younger than 19 years old) years of his career.
Players with five or more years of MLB experience can refuse an "Option" to the minors even if all three "Options" were not used by team.
Players who are not added to 40-man roster or drafted in the Rule 5 draft become minor league free-agents after six years.

ANOTHER BALL THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CAUGHT IN LEFT! I am trying very very hard to accept that this team is better with him in the lineup right now....at this moment.... very hard! AND how he struck out at a ball in the dirt in a key situation.
The way I see it right now, Pie and Soriano are 6 guaranteed outs, which is 2 innings wasted "waiting" for them to come around. That's not going to win you a division.

Not perfect, but how about he try and play halfway respectable? He isn't even doing that. He is totally messing up everything he does. He is swinging at pitches in the dirt, he is lazily running after balls hit his way, etc.... How about, since he is just coming back, that he show some discipline at the plate? He sure as heck isn't doing that.
He is not worth the money this organization gave him. He is damaged goods. He will never be the same again. He runs around the base paths like he is still hurt. I do not see him being the player he was a couple years ago.

I am starting to get a bad taste in my mouth. The more i watch him play the more i realize how undisciplined he is. I think he has talent, but i think there are many things he needs to work on. Although i do like his arm in left, his defense is suspect especially with the injured leg. He can't steal bases like he used to, partially because of his leg and partially because he can't get on base. Honestly i think he has a BIG HEAD.

You tell me...from the way Soriano conducts himself on the field and at the plate the positive things he brings to young players?
What should Pie emulate from him?

It was his first game back. back away from the ledge
He'll come around... it is May 1st.
A couple of people with some sense on a board that seems to be full of skepticism.
Since when is a WS won in the first month? For as many times as Soriano will KO, he'll get on base.
How is it that fans can panic a month into the season when the win percentage is .600?

Panic is your word...not mine.
In whatever I do I always try to get better at what I'm doing...so sending some guys to Iowa, for example, to have this happen isn't panic in my mind...it is preparing for the future need.

Could be...but I certainly don't see panic...I think most fans want to see the players do better...and in Soriano's case he is not showing any real progress while probably still being hurt...so it should be dealt with at another level.
In Pie's case I don't think it does him any good to sit the bench and watch Soriano;)...Pie should be down in Iowa working on his stroke every day against live pitching...get him in a groove and bring him up when his confidence is high.

You're obviously not panicking.... right?

Whatever...you just don't get it...throw the whole DL thing out already!...because Soriano was playing like crap before it too!
And yeah I'll bitch at a $136M player who is hitting .170, has no plate discipline and doesn't want to learn any, dogs it in the OF, etc. whenever I want.

He was cold at the beginning of the season, so what did you expect coming off the DL?
I mean do you have any realistic grasp of the game or are you just throwing a temper tantrum trying to get attention?
I get it, you want to down a guy who's determined as hell and tries way too hard at times. I'd like to see you do what he does... you can bring up money if you'd like, but that only brings more pressure. Let the guy play some games before we tear him down...
You'll dog him because he makes the money... Derrek Lee had a hard time hitting home runs last year... because of an injury... the previous year. So what the hell? Why was DLee given a pass last season... c'mon... it's just absurd to be so bitchy this early in a 162 game season. Seriously.

That is the point...I didn't expect ANYTHING...I expected the Cubs to make him do rehab in Iowa.
Yeah, baseball is a really hard game to grasp... And I don't need attention...that is laughable!
I'm not trying to down him...LOL...like he gives a crap...you are too much! OMG that is ridiculous!
I will dog him for not being a team player...because he isn't one...because he would pout and not take a rehab assignment in Iowa well, because he will pout if he doesn't bat leadoff, because he can't ever do anything unselfish, etc.
If you can't see my point oh well, just agree to disagree and move on...c-ya!

soriano will get better so hes having a rough start...maybe a little time in Iowa would be good then again maybe not, pie is awsome down there but in the majors isnt as great, just maybe if he could admit his faults and then start working on not taking every breaking ball that is thrown at him he would be better. soriano just needs time to get back what he lost

I agree with you about Pie. Soriano on the other hand needs to adjust to pitches away and breaking balls. That seems to be were hes being pitched. He'll come around. I guess some people flip out when 1 of 8 players is having a slow start. HE ALWAYS STARTS SLOW! Don't they pay attention to the facts? Or is it just that these losers need a player to hate at all times? I think its a mixture of the two. Hahaha, "hes not a team player blah, blah, blah", thats total BS. Its loud 670 sheep like this that give all fans of a team a bad reputation.
Anyone saying Soriano isn't a team player shouldn't be taken seriously on baseball matters. Its that simple, becuase Soriano has MORE World Series rings than you or me!
Having a franchise record in April isn't good enough for the people who have gotten use to the pain of losing, and expect it every year.

Since he's officially started working with Perry/Lou, Pie is batting over 300. If Lou were smart, he would notice that Reed's offensive production is starting to trail off significantly against RHP.

Speaking of loser posts I'll reply to this one...:D
ALWAYS?! You are as misinformed as ever...what a stupid comment.
Soriano batted .270 in April last year...308 the year before...267 the year before that...341 in 04...a LOT higher than this year!
Why don't you do some homework before proving yourself beyond a doubt to be the idiot...though it will be hard I'm sure.
As for a team player...what does winning a WS have to do with that?! LOL
AS has demonstrated he is not a team player many times...with the Nationals by threatening to sit out when they wanted him to switch to the OF...he never volunteers himself to be moved down the order...he never uses an AB to intentionally move a runner over...etc.

I think it's already been established that he's well within his right to not take the rehab assignment. We're not talking about Pie here, we're talking about Soriano. Been in the majors for quite some time now, and is on his 5th MLB team. I'm pretty sure that he knows how to play by now...
He may be rusty, but him smacking around minor league pitching isn't going to do anything to help the club at this point.
Baseball seems to be well out of your grasp, considering you expect Soriano to have 20 HR already... if that's not what you expect, then what it is? When has Soriano really shown you that he's not a team player? How much time have you spent in the clubhouse?
Or are you basing that opinion on what you've heard from commentators? I thought you formed your own opinion?
C-ya nothing, you're trying to weasel out of the argument because you've got nothing to say. Stop crying for attention.

You must be a joke and also must not be able to read...
How about expecting him to hit his weight? Is that out of the question? How about him volunteering to be moved down the order to see what happens? How about him ever trying to hit the ball the other way? How about a bunt every now and then? How about him asking to spend more time getting fungoed flies hit to him?

You're basing an opinion on things that you don't know to be true. That's called speculation.
Give me evidence that you see that Soriano doesn't work hard or doesn't take extra practice with fungos or whatever it is you were rambling about.

Have you ever seen Soriano consistently try to work a count? Lay down a sac bunt? Hit the other way to advance a runner? Publicly announce it is OK for Lou to move him down the order?

He's basically Sosa with runners legs, I know this. My point is that you're making statements about things like his workout regiment or his commitment to the team... He's up there to try to get on base, and he tries to knock in homers. I know what he's doing wrong. I just don't quite think you're seeing the same thing that I am... seems like you're nitpicking.
I also don't think he knows enough English to publicly announce anything, and right now, he's their best option. He did move from center to left, quite early in his Cubs career if you'll recall.
If anything, his combination of power and speed work against him instead of for him. He's grown accustomed to hitting homers, and gets the weight of the world thrown on his shoulders, so I'd imagine he figures he's got to hit one every time. He's also been rusty since he's been back on forth to the DL since coming here, so I don't think there's ever really been a time when he's been at full speed, so he's trying to rely on his bat. I personally think he's just trying way too hard. He's still one helluva competitor, and he shows up everyday to play. They're a better team with him on it, as strange as that sounds, because his bat will go BOOM and win games for them singlehandedly. Granted, his defense leaves a lot to be desired, but that's not exactly why they brought him here. He was signed for his bat, signed to hit leadoff, and they're getting the best he has to offer.
You don't know enough about me to not call me freind, but I do know this... you told me that you were wasting your time responding to me, and would no longer do it... and less than 2 hours later, you were responding to me...:o
