If Marquis can be harnessed he could win some games. The problem with him is he's real good or real bad... You don't know what you're getting...

Yeah his age is a good point. His 2004 stats are a good way to look at his ability.

more news on marquis
Cubs After Marquis
Jim Hendry will spend the night at the hospital and then head home to work out a deal with Jason Marquis. Hendry worked deals from his hospital bed last night signing Ted Lilly and Daryle Ward. Since he lost out on Gil Meche, he will pursue Plan B, which is Jason Marquis. Marquis pitched for the Cardinals last year going 14-16 with a 6.02 ERA and 96 K. Over the past three years with the Cardinals, Marquis has gone 42-37 with a 4.62 ERA in 602.2 innings. The intial offer to Marquis was reportedly a three year deal worth 28-30 million dollars.

If you take out last year's numbers, he was 28-21 with around a 3-point ERA.

$10mil/yr for Marquis? Please tell me this isn't going to happen. Go look at the stats. Suppan would be a much better choice, not to mention durable. He has started at least 31 games and has at least 185 IP each of the last 8 years, plus owns a 57-37 record over the last 4 years. Really nice numbers and he is still only 31. Honestly, how are we not jumping on this guy with what else is out there?

I think we're going after Maquis as a switch-hitting PH....
(bit of good ole cubs.com-style hendry-baiting for y'all)

I don't know. I am starting to be sold on signing Jason Marquis due to his youth, the whole "change of scenary" thing, and the fact that he has logged 200+ innings in several different seasons. He seems to be durable to a certain degree. I think he would be a good #3 for us. Better than Meche. I am glad Meche signed somewhere else now. I think there is more upside to Marquis than we are giving him credit for. Seriously, he is the same age as Meche and definitely has a better track record than him.
I think I just totally talked myself into it. I am little excited about this prospect.
Hmmmm....

Marquis is not worth the money they are about to give him.
Im guessing the Jason Jennings deal is dead too.
Isnt there anyone better out there??
I rather go with Guzman/Marmol/Marshall/Miller/Prior than Marquis.
Speaking of Sean Marshall, Ive read somewhere that the Cubs were discussing with the Nats about swapping him for Ryan Church.
Thoughts?

I agree. Marquis is not worth it. None of these guys are worth this kind of money. BUT, it is the going rate in this inflated era, so what have ya. I like him better than Gil Meche. The Jennings deal was never really alive. They wanted Rich Hill which would have been totally retarded on our part. I personally think Guzman is a bust and that Miller is still iffy at best. I think IF Prior can return to form, he will get the "5th" spot and the others will just have to wait or go elsewhere. They had their shots last year and didn't make the cut. I hear the only untouchables in the Cubs system are Pie, Marmol, and Hill. Probably Patterson too, but I really haven't heard that. I don't understand the Church deal though because the thought is they don't want to tie anyone up in CF for too long because the plan is to give it to Pie by at least next year. We'll see.

Well Church would make a great backup outfielder IMO.
Plus I would feel more comfortable with a Pagan/Church CF then Grandpa Lofton CF.
As for Pie, if hes ready for CF, Im all for it. But they are no guarantees that he will be ready next year either.
I really wish we still had Corey Patterson.....................who did we get for him anyway?

We basically got nothing. Two low level minor leaguers I've never heard of. All because the fans are idiots and wouldn't give him a chance....
What's new, right?

yup i totally agree, of course Corey was my fave player and then the fans treated him like **** (give the guy a chance) i was really hoping he'd have a breakout season for the O's to kind of rub it in Chicago's face. now all i hope for is he signs back after 2007.......seriously doubt that though

Patterson would be great on this team, i think he was just another unfortunate case of being brought up too fast
