Well, we are 44 games in and we have the 2nd best record in baseball behind the team that swept us from the playoffs last year. By default, the Cubs are the better team because they handed the D-Backs their asses last weekend via a 3 game sweep in Chi-town.

Big Z. I'll start with him. I was on him hardcore last year because he made all these claims of being the ace and winning the cy young and a world series and didn't back it up. He has finally pitched this year like the ace he is. Yesterday was not a good day but there will be days like that. The thing I have noticed is that his strikeouts are down. That's a not a bad thing because with that his walks are down. That tells me he is finally using his sinker to induce ground balls like he should instead of trying to rely solely on his fastball and paint the corners to every batter. He is on pace for a career low in walks and I think that has been the key for the first two months of the season. This is the point of the season in the past where he has "turned it on" and gotten it going. I am excited to see where he is in 2 months.

Dempster - WTF? I liked Dempster as our closer. I think I was alone in this, but whatever. I was nervous with this transition because his career as a starter wasn't stellar. Now I am excited every time he pitches! How crazy is that? Not much else to say other than he has totally exceded my expectations.

Lilly - is finally starting to come around. I was a little nervous he would get knocked around coming into this season and revert to previous form, but it seems from all indications that it was because his velocity was down and not because the league had him figured out. He looks to be a solid #2 or #3 now depending on where you want to stick him with regards to Dempster. I like this little "problem" we have. haha

#4 and #5 starters - This could change depending on Lou's mood, but it seems that Marquis and Gallagher earned themselves at least one more start for now since they both pitched pretty well this weekend. I wonder if we will see Hill before September callups if these guys keep it up?

Bullpen and Closer - I have seen worse for this team and it seems that Howry is still hit or miss, but regardless if he gave up a run today he still did the job and got the hold and Woody came in and saved it. Marmol is Marmol and had to have a bad day at some point. Yesterday was it and I hope that's all we see of it. LOL My first statement is misleading because this past week, the bullpen has actually been awesome! I think until yesterday they had gone so many games without giving up a run. I thought i heard that somewhere. Anybody have stats on that?

Soriano - He's hitting...finally! lol The bottom line is he is a great hitter, but I personally don't like him at leadoff. Oh well, I leave it up to Lou to take us to the promise land. I apologize for the couple of times I compared Lou to Dusty. Dusty would have buried this team by now. Back to Soriano. He's hitting well and I don't think he cost us any games with his erratic fielding lately, so that is good. I still love his arm. Still not worth $136 million though, no matter what he does.

Theriot - I wanted Brian Roberts in the off season which would have displaced Theriot in my opinion because I don't think they would have benched DeRosa. I am uber happy with Theriot. Regardless of his CS stats so far, I think he needs to steal more bases. He is going to steal more than he gets caught. He's a fast little white boy.

Lee - Hmmm... I guess I was wrong about him cooling off. Boy, do I feel like an idiot! LOL Seriously though, I expect him to pick it back up here soon AND to make things that much better is that once both he and ARam get hot then WATCH OUT! This could get ugly. Lee is cold and other guys like Soto and Soriano have taken this team on their shoulders and it is a non-issue. This is what i was talking about. Not everyone can be or should be hot at the same time and it will only benefit this team for guys to take turns and keep the runs coming.

Ramirez - He started out a little slow and really has not hit his stride yet. It's like the calm before the storm. I just have this feeling he is about to go ape-**** for about a 2 week tear! I predict at least one grand slam in the next two weeks. Our most clutch player is about to turn it on.

Fukudome - What the Fuk is this guy on? Although, it doesn't seem he is tearing up as much lately as before, he stills seems to always be on base or making some contribution to the game. He has this weird presence of being there even when he goes 0-4. I would love to see the benefit analysis of Soto hitting behind Fuku. Not sure if that made sense but i know what i mean and that's all the matters. :D

Soto - Is this kid even a rookie? He's a had a couple of hiccups with his strikout streak and such but so far he is 90% solid and is starting to become the guy I want up to bat with men on base. Good arm, good backstop, great bat. I hope he keeps it up and it would be interesting to see if he can take the "rookie" of the year from Fukudome.

Johnson/Edmonds - I like Johnson. He seems to be pretty solid at the plate and in the field. He also seems like he is due for a little streak of his own. As for Edmonds, I am rooting for this guy just for the simple fact that it will only benefit the team and if he does a great job for us, then that is another way to stick in the Cards fans faces. Regardless of what the fans down here in Stl say about him, he is an icon here and nothing would make me happier than to have a solid stint for their arch rival. HAHA!!

Bench - I think this bench is about as solid as we have ever had. Any one of these guys could start for this team right now the way they are hitting with the exception of Hoffpauir. He has one AB under his belt. He is a wait and see. Pie was the weak link and now he is gone. For good? Only Hendry knows that for sure. I think Lou has made his decision now it is up to Hendry to find out what to do with him. If Lou doesn't like you then pack your bags. Just ask Barrett and Izturis.

Overall, this team seems to be playing as well as they could be and seem to be on a serious roll. They are about to be tested with a short 6 game road trip. They HAVE to win on the road. They cannot play this well at home and then go on the road and have an experience like the previous trip. The way they are playing though, I like their chances. So, stay tuned...

It was amazing watching this weekend just how good our offense really is. I mean we could have swept this series easily and our 2 best hitters did not even get a hit.

Rammy- I know a lot of us are praising him for his walks, but his strikeouts are up and his numbers are a little below what he normally does. I think the hand thing really set him back a little because he was starting to heat it up. He went hitless this weekend, but has gotten his share of hits lately- its just not those loud hits- I look for him to get going again soon.

I would love to get a 7th inning guy to take some of the load off of Marmol. Howry is it right now. I also like having 2 LHs in the pen. We ahve basically had 1 all year.

8-2 homestand, not much more you can say.

I really hope Gallagher has 3 or 4 solid starts and kills the Cubs "Jerk Me Around Monkey" before it ever has a chance to climb on and get a grip. I think this kid could be very good before all is said and done and we're likely really going to need all the pitching we can get.

Getting Gallagher settled and getting Hill back in shape (whatever his problems are) are just about the only 2 things I can see to really worry about. Maybe a little more stability in the bullpen would be nice, that and some dancing girls on the sidelines when it gets good and hot.

We're head and shoulders above the rest of baseball scoring and our under-rated defense hasn't done a stupid thing in a long time (probably afraid to with "Sweet Lou" stalking the dugout).

What's wrong with Hill - we need him?

Fantastic post...

I agree with just about everything you said, I don't know what else to add really.

Like you said, A-Ram is going to explode for 2-4 weeks at some point and just hit the living **** out of the ball.

Second best record in the bigs, GO CUBS!!!!!

*EDIT*... updated standings would be nice. :)

Dempster - WTF? Not much else to say other than he has totally exceded my expectations.

mine too

Soriano - He's hitting...finally! lol The bottom line is he is a great hitter, but I personally don't like him at leadoff.

I concur, but since they are playing well they probably won't change anything.

not worth $136 million though, no matter what he does.

In my opinion no player is worth $136, not even a "60 homers" Soriano.

Theriot - He's a fast little white boy.

all i have to say is "LOL"

Wow, roenick!!!! Great post!

By default, the Cubs are the better team because they handed the D-Backs their asses last weekend via a 3 game sweep in Chi-town.
Just ask Mara! :)

Big Z. It has been fun watching him maturing. Yesterday, he said he felt off even doing his warmups. He seemed as if something was not right with him from the beginning, so I hope he gets it figured out before his next start.

Dempster - WTF? I liked Dempster as our closer. I think I was alone in this, but whatever. I was nervous with this transition because his career as a starter wasn't stellar. Now I am excited every time he pitches! How crazy is that? Not much else to say other than he has totally exceded my expectations.
I, too, was a skeptic.....his ninth inning roller coaster rides made me wonder if I could emotionally handle 5 or 6 innings of him, but he has proved me wrong.... I'm ecstatic!

Lilly - we need this guy to pitch like the Lilly of last year.

#4 and #5 starters - This could change depending on Lou's mood, but it seems that Marquis and Gallagher earned themselves at least one more start for now since they both pitched pretty well this weekend. I wonder if we will see Hill before September callups if these guys keep it up?
I wouldn't be surprised if Hendry doesn't go after a veteran come the deadline to help us down the stretch. Hill seems to be strugging very much down there, but Marshall is doing awesome, so we may see Marshall before we see Hill.... Marquis did okay today, especially for a number 4 starter, but he is on thin ice..... he makes me nervous whenever he takes the ball.

Anybody have stats on that?

this was from the game notes on May 14th...
The bullpen has started this homestand with 11.2 scoreless innings, allowing just six hits and four walks while striking out eight and limiting opponents to a .162 batting average (6-for-37)
… overall, the bullpen has tossed 13.2 shutout innings dating to May 7 in Cincinnati.
Over the team’s last nine games, the Cubs bullpen has a 1.42 ERA (4 ER/25.1 IP), keeping the opponent off the board in eight of those contests.
I think we have a fairly solid pen..... I think we have one of those where the opposing announcers say, "We don't want to get into their bullpen, because they tend to shut the offensive game down" :)

Daryle Ward told Soriano he just needed to not play until the weather gets warm every year.... perhaps he's onto something there ;)....

I'm sooooooo glad that we didn't sell the farm for HE WHO'S NAME SHALL NOT BE SPOKEN ON THIS BOARD... PROBABLY NEVER NOW! I like that Theriot is being aggressive on the bases knowing that with Soriano's leg injuries that he needs to be the one to get on and get over so the table is set for the big guys to bring him in.

He's definately in a little slump, but what it shows is just how rounded out our team is. We just had an 8-2 homestand and our two "big guys" are slumping!!!! Can you imagine what our offense would be like if they all got hot at the same time? We may see men on the mound reduced to little balls of tears by the time they got to our pitcher, oh, wait, 4 of our hurlers also have a little "bat-men" in them!

Ramirez - He started out a little slow and really has not hit his stride yet. It's like the calm before the storm. I just have this feeling he is about to go ape-**** for about a 2 week tear! I predict at least one grand slam in the next two weeks. Our most clutch player is about to turn it on. I hope Mr. Clutch shows up in Houston this week.... show up Big Butt Berkman.

:D...weird... I knew exactly what you meant!!!! He can even go 0-4 and he's still intimdating...and you may not even realize that he is slumping until it is pointed out!

I think what is even more impressive than his bat (and it is a very nice bat, at that), but how he handles the pitchers.... all of them. I'm not sure if he calls the entire game, but he sure knows when he needs to go out there and get Z's game back on track, or when to just get out there and give Marquis a breather.... I'm hoping this kid is a Cub for a very long time.

Johnson/Edmonds - I like Johnson. He seems to be pretty solid at the plate and in the field. He also seems like he is due for a little streak of his own. A very good pick up by Mr. Hendry! I like this guy

HAHA!! I'm working on it.... I hope he does well.... for all the reasons you mentioned, but it is still very very weird to see him in a Cubs uniform, and it will be even weirder when it is against the Cardianls!

I'm hoping Micah does well in the bigs.... and Pie, he'll be back, but they just need to make sure that he is ready for good the next time he comes back..... I think Lou does like Pie, and he even spent extra time with the kid.... but Lou was right, the Bigs is not the place to "learn how to hit"....

We need this next series badly. I don't want to leave Houston in second place, or worse!

Great post by all that contributed!!! I am in heaven with the way this team is playing and what makes it nice is at any given time our offense can explode and give us a early comfortable lead. This team is not even comparable to the team we seen last year and we all know where we got last year so where could that lead us this year? Well I just recently moved back to the south suburbs after being in Ohio the last 8 years and I am looking forward to some big celebrations at and around Wrigley come October, hope to see some of you there!!!

great post, and I agree with basically everything. I thought I was on an island by myself with Demps as a starter. Everyone else was seemingly terrified. I thought he would be good, but not this good.

and for what its worth, while we did beat the bejesus out of the of DBacks, I cant say that we are the better team. They have the better record, and like it or not a better pitching rotation. Our offense is far better, but come playoff time thats one rotation that I do not want to face.

Great Post !!

Big Z 18 + wins

Lilly 18 wins maybe more with run support

Dempster 20 wins ( yes I believe ) < has been a subject of my man - love for a long time

#4 and #5 -doesn't really matter we can get 12 - 15 wins just rotating up from our minors dropping in pitchers without much scouting on them get 4 - 5 innings then go to our -

Bullpen - Best in baseball If Scott Eyre can be solid , I really have a good feeling about him .

Ramirez , Lee - will match their normal stats so expect Rammy to heat up and Lee to start having better at bats .

Soto = rookie of the year , I expect him to be a great catcher he seems to have improved and backing off on calling so many fastballs ( fine for starter pitchers not so on relief pitching )

Fukudome should do well on the road in bigger parks with lots of outfield holes to drop in hits .

Edmonds , Johnson seems to be working we will see if they can avoid getting hurt .

Bench - keep an eye on Ronny Cedano , they may be tooling him for another super- utility guy like DeRosa , if true Sadie - bar -the- door , we are on our way !!!

As objective as I can be , I see this team as one of the top 3 or 4 in baseball . Expect to see our future opponents to really prepare for us .

bump let's see where we were
