I'm looking for some help here. Along with being an avid 30+ year Cub fan, I've collected coins for that long as well. I want to run some contests this summer, based on Cubs trivia, giving away some nice coins dated from 1908.
Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a list of Cub third basemen since Santo? I've seen it printed in the Trib over the years, but searched Google and couldn't locate. Of course, I'm no Google expert, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think it was like 37, maybe more of them before Rammy. Here is a few of the ones that are not so popular- Lenny Harris, Gary Scott, Kevin Orie, Chico Walker, Curtis Wilkerson??, Steve Bueschelle, Todd Zeile, Bill Mueller, Vance Law, Ron Cey, Keith Moreland, Gary Gaetti- thats just a few

What you could do is go to Baseball reference.com or Baseball Almanac and check the Cubs roster every year since Santo.

OMG, i just looked it up it has been 99 different ones since Santo- I think the article I read was written in 2006- so it would now be 101- Dero and Theriot

I bet you read the review of This Old Cub that I did.

If somebody hasn't compiled a list to consult this could get difficult. Example: a guy named Sandberg played 3rd for the Cubs, for a little while. In 1974 Bill Madlock was the starter, he played something like 136 games. Who played 3rd the other 26 games? (I think it was Billy Grabarkewitz. Who is a real person and not somebody I just made up.)

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/teamstats/roster.php?y=1974&t=CHN

If this is somehow important and you want to try to figure it out you might want to start with a link like the above and go through year by year. Guessing at the fill-ins.
The fastest way to go year to year is to go up to the URL and change the date and hit refresh. It might not take that long - if you can get the fill-ins right.

1974 - Bill Madlock to ...
1977 - Steve Ontiveros to
1980 - Lenny Randle to
1981 - Ken Reitz to
1982 - Sandberg - (played 133 games at 3rd) to
1983 - Ron Cey (as played by Burgess Meredith) to
(The Penguin was something of a fixture until the next guy in 1987. But they also used old farts like Richie Hebner and Davey Lopes. See how annoying it can get?)
1987 - Keith Moreland

And so on and so on ......

I actually liked Chad Meyers, but it seemed like he pit on some weight and was never the same. Nieves- Chip Carey loved that guy for some reason.

Nomar, dont forget. Im at aloss in 2003 though before Rammy came over. I know we had Lenny Harris that played some but there had to be somebody else.

3rd baseman trivia: only two 3rd basemen in history have won 5 or more Gold Gloves and hit 300 or more HRs. One's a jackass and the other should be in the HOF.

Just for reference and the curious:

" ..... Adding to Len and Bob’s baseball blog

Len [Kasper] and Bob run a baseball blog for WGN. One of the posts on their site tells an individual how to voice their opinion to the Veterans Committee.

Here’s where you can help: [B]Fans wishing to voice their opinion in support of their favorite candidates [who might that be?] may do so in two ways: by sending a single letter to Hall of Fame Veterans Committee, 25 Main Street, Cooperstown, NY 13326, or by logging on to baseballhalloffame.org and sending an e-mail. The Hall of Fame does not forward petitions to the voting members, but makes all correspondence known to any interested voting members, as well as to the Screening Committee members and Historical Overview Committee members.

SantoForHall.com has been collecting petitions and sending them to the Veterans Committee and will continue to do so until the vote is over. Please sign the petition to add your voice here as well....."

While you are there tell the relevant parties that Mike Schmidt is a jackass. SkullKey says so and he can kiss my ass.

This thread has got me slumming around Gooogle's backwaters and I discovered something I had completely forgotten: Bobby Bonds, father of Barry, played for the Cubs.

In 1981, aged 35, he played in 45 games for the Cubs and got somewhere around 200 plate appearances. He hit .215 and 6 HRs. He then passed out and retired.

Manny Trillo, Jose Viz caino

As far as Law sitting the bench, I really dont remember- I just remember him making the team. If he did sit on the bench the entire game he is in Hall of Fame country- see Albert Pujols
