The Cubs selected Sonny Gray with their 27th pick. This guy has pitched against my high school team for the past 4 seasons. He was projected in April to possibly go as high as the 20th pick of the draft, however he broke his ankle and missed the rest of the season. His stock dropped supposedly to the second or third round. 2 weeks ago he sent out a letter to MLB saying not to draft him because he was going to Vanderbilt no matter what. I talked to his former high school coach today- supposedly the Cubs are offering him 900,000 to sign which is very lofty for a 27th rounder and promise to pay for his education. I doubt he will bite, but maybe he will be our next Casher. He is about the same size as Oswalt. He throws low to mid 90s with excellent breaking pitches.

Thank god the mlb draft doesn't weigh as much as the NBA or NFL drafts on the upcoming seasons. I'm sure this kid can deal, but for the cubs to pay for his education and hope 4 years from now he can rocket through the minors is a stretch. Especially with an ankle injury. Can't be effective if you either can't push of the rubber or land on the mound. Risky.
