I just wonder if he was the best available. Maybe I am greedy, but I had hoped they would have upgraded the rotation leaps and bounds. Lilly and Marquis are subject to the long ball. While I still like the additionof Lilly, I wonder about Marquis. Can't work with Mazzone or Duncan but somehow can work with Rothschild? who is our number 2 starter? Where does Marquis fit in?
3 seasons under 5 ERA and one of them was a partial season in the rotation. While I know that we have upgraded our rotation, I wonder how much. Anything is an upgrade from 12 minor leaguers we threw in there last year. 1908 isn't in my recent memory.

I agree Shwerve. I think Lilly will be okay, but I'm not too high on Marquis. If he can be the pitcher he was a couple years ago, then fine, I just don't see it happening. I would have preferred a combo of Schmidt and Suppan to these two, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see how they do. The one good thing is our offense has improved, so we don't necessarily need great pitchers throughout our entire rotation.

Our offense has notable improved. Our pitching has improved some. I still have wet dreams over the thought of Zambrano and Schmidt at the top of the rotation. No one would want to play us in a short series. I tihnk we should have some consistency in the rotation that we didn't have. Defense is average. Could you imagine if our surplus of pitching would allow us to send someone over to TB for Crawford? To be a Cubs fan is to be a dreamer sometimes

This signing has alot of "ifs" involved in it. If he can pitch like he did two years ago. If they didn't overpay. The reports are suggesting they paid beween 20-28 Million over three years. As a Cubs fan it really makes me worry when the Cubs make that questionable signing and take the risks because we all know that the past risks the Cubs have taken just have not panned out in our favor. Lets hope that this one does, because if not it could be another blow to our rotation which struggled terrible last year with 15 different starters and I will have a hard time watching that again.

I agree with Shwerve in the fact that it is better than throwing a rookie out there.

Im a bit concerned about marquis as well, but as long as he eats innings and keeps us in games he doesnt need to be dominant. As far as lilly and marquis being susceptible to the long ball, remember the wind blows in just as much as it does out. when the wind is blowing in, homerun balls are routine flys. when the wind is blowing out, every pitcher is a homerun pitcher.

Marquis has a lower career era then Suppan and he's cheaper. I like it

I'd say hendry was on a roll by signing soriano and everyone else, but by signing marquis-he killed it.

I'm not to sure about this signing either but in an upward swing if you look at how he pitched before the All-Star break he was just as good as Zambrano. He went downhill the second half of the season so with that in mind he is definatly capable of being lights out on the mound, lets hope he gets it back together and if so it could also be one of the best signings of the off-season.

The price of pitching now is crazy and if Mr. Marquis can get back to his old self or even give us 12 to 14 wins then 7 million is pretty darn good. I say we give him a chance and if it doesnt work then we hopefully have prior and miller ready to go. I believe he has alot to prove and he definitely has the stuff to be good again.

I like this signing, it's good to have the insurance at the bottom of the rotation

If he can pitch like he did before the allstar break, then it is a good signing.

And you can't blame Hendry for this signing, it's not like this guy was our main guy to get the whole time. He was our backup after Schmidt and Meche went to different teams.
