The guy is should be banned from MLB and the House of Representatives should pass a resolution declaring him a national disgrace along with Sammy Sosa. Who cares about the summer of 1998, I think the end doesn't justify the means. These guys ruined the 90's with there roids. They tainted the players that were most likely "clean" that would have gotten the MVP's, Cy Youngs and so on. We were all fools to buy into it.

Read this and you will understand my anger. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=mcgwire

Sosa's only coming back if someone wants him, and so far, it doesn't look like anyone wants him.

disclaimer: obviously wasn't around for the summer of 98 (age and geography), don't have complete background on this, and i've never had an opinion on the steriod debate.

that story is just sad: i don't care what he "did", it just is. he's not like sosa, who i dont feel bad about describing as an egomaniacal jackass, he just wants to move on.

furthermore, blaming him as a person is a cheap shot, you know the whole baseball system around him led to him doing it, and tons of sluggers from that age have suspicious numbers (l.gonzo: 57hr??). he could have been a bigger man but he wasnt, and its not like he could change it now.

on the other hand (and i'd like to think i can be impartial, i have no emotional involvement in this), if he has no contact with his past, professionally or personally, why not tell what he knows. i guess he's just developed a sense of defending those who were around him for whatever reason.

still bloody tragic if you ask me.

So much anger. I've never met him, but I'm sure he's a nice guy. MLB didn't properly test for steroids. In a game where everyone is trying to get an advantage, players do what they can. Be it supplements, spitballs, sign stealing, steroids, whatever, its been going on for years. It feels like McCarthyism. Not everyone who is big/muscular is a communist. McGwire probably took steroids. Sosa probably took steroids. Imagine all the other clowns who likely also abused but are under the radar. If players like Guillermo Mota are testing postive now, imagine how many people got away with it in the past and we'll never know. Why make McGwire the face of steroids? So many flaws existed in the system. Why is he held to a different standard than Gaylord Perry.

Didn't Felix Heredia test positive? HA! that is humor. Explains why he was so good

In all fairness to sosa he was never accused of it and his name never came up in this discussion. I think he made a jackass move but as far as the steroid issue innocent til proven guilty.

john, if that was toward me, what i was trying to say was that mcgwire is a much more sympathetic figure than sosa

Doesn't even matter. Sosa and McGwire's name go hand in hand given the homerun chase of 1998 and overall speculation about size and numbers. The article was about McGwire, but its a bigger picture. We can't prove anything now. Its all hearsay.

You know.. alot of people don't agree with me.. but lets be honest here: 1998 was great for baseball. Without it, think about where the Cubs would be.. think about where baseball in general would be.. It was awesome for baseball.. and if it took cheating to do it.. that sucks, but it got the job done.

The end doesn't justify the means IMO. Why all the sudden Mac and Sosa hit that many homers?? Heck, Sosa hit 60 or more homers in 3 seasons. Roger Maris did it once. Also you need to hear what Rogers family said about Mac after his testimony. Heck lets just build robots to hit homers so the casual fan can be happy. The game is more than home runs.

I'm not saying it's right... I'm just saying that's the way it is.

I agree with you, roids or not that was exciting and it brought fans back to the ballpark and alot more fans started watching baseball on TV.

alot of people say that this is going to kill baseball..it ain't like baseball hasn't been rocked by scandal before.. look back to the blacksocks.. that crap was huge. But baseball moved on to bigger and better things.. This whole steroids thing is boring to me.. it's a fact of life that people will try whatever they can to get ahead in life.. I guess what I'm trying to say is that finding out that these guys cheating rediculously unsurprising. Looking back, can we really say that we didn't see it coming?
