Brandon McCarthy-R-Rangers Dec. 23 - 3:15 pm et
Rangers acquired RHP Brandon McCarthy and OF David Paisano from the White Sox for LHP John Danks, RHP Nick Masset and RHP Jacob Rasner.
McCarthy is no savior, but he's a long-term No. 3 starter still five years away from free agency, and it's quite a coup for GM Jon Daniels that he was able to get the 23-year-old using just one of his top starting pitching prospects. McCarthy will join Kevin Millwood, Vicente Padilla and likely Robinson Tejeda in next year's rotation. This shouldn't have any effect on the Rangers' pursuit of Barry Zito. It does make it less likely that Akinori Otsuka will be traded for a starting pitcher, though that still could happen if Zito heads elsewhere.

It's another step backwards for the 2005 World Series champs, at least for the short term. McCarthy's upside has been overblown, and Danks likely has a similar amount of potential. Still, McCarthy is the better bet for the future, as he's already proven he's capable of handling major league hitters. Also, we think he's more likely to remain healthy. Danks, 21, went 9-9 with a 4.24 ERA, 141 H and 154/56 K/BB in 140 IP between Double- and Triple-A last season. He might be ready to step into the White Sox rotation in the second half, but it's probably going to be 2008 or 2009 before he's a real asset. With McCarthy gone, Charlie Haeger and Gavin Floyd look like the favorites to act as the club's fifth starter.
