I'm kinda surprised he didn't get more because of how other pitchers were paid. Still overpaid though.

This gives the Brew Crew some legitimacy. Sheets, Capuano, Suppan and Bush (and whoever in the 5 hole) is a good rotation. They have some nice young hitters. They should compete. The central is not gonna be a cake walk by any means

Looks like it's going to be a two-, maybe three-team race in the Central this year. Cubs, Cards and Beermakers are going to battle this year.

I doubt the Cards are gonna do anything, they have no rotation.

I think the reason he didn't get more was his age. I like Jeff Suppon but he is years older than Jason Marquis. I know that Jason Marquis had very high ERA but LaRussa let him take a few bullets for the team last season. If you take those 2 terrible outings out of his numbers his ERA is lowered by 1.15. Both Suppon and Marquis have had success in St Louis but it was not on a consistant basis. The Cards don't want to shell out the money and the players are not offering huge hometown discounts to them that is the Cardinals problem :D

Exactly. Walt Jocketty IMO is a pretty bad GM. I can't think of one really good F/A signing in recent years. Last year was a major major fluke. Besides Poo Holes and carp its a team of role players. No one can convince me that they won the World Series, Detroit lost it.

this signing makes me wonder why the Cubs didnt go after him, unless Hendry just wanted a lefty. Suppan though is guaranteed to eat 200 innings whereas we HOPE Lilly can reach 200. For the same amount of money we should have gotten Suppan, hopefully Hendry knows something we dont.

Yep, the brewers are finally making an effort to field a decent team. The NL central will go down to the wire this year for sure. Next september s going to be fun as hell.

He's so overated it's not even funny, last year his era was 5 all season until early September and he finally brought it down. The Brewers have a deep rotation when it's all said and done I wouldn't be shocked is Suppan was there #5 number wise.

Suppan always has been a contact pitcher, these types flourish with good defense behind them. The Cards had good defensive ballclubs, the Brewers are a poor team on defense. Soup will crash and burn there, like he did in KC.

i hate the Cards as much as anybody, but I wouldn't call Jocketty a Bad GM.
As for last year being a fluke, If you put your team in playoff contention as consistently as the Cards have done over the recent past, you are bound to win sometime, whether it's in a season when you have 105 or 83 wins.
A CArdinal fan can probably make as much of an argument that 2003 was a "fluke" season for the Cubs as last syear was a "fluke" season for the Cardinals, seeing as the Cubs haven't even been in the playoffs since with essentially the same management team in place.

I too dislike the Cardinals, but Jocketty,in my humble opinion,is one of the best G.M.'S in baseball.
