as much as i like Zito, that is way too much money to give a pitcher not named Carlos Zamrano or Johan Santana.....this is the wrong section unless the Giants are now wearing Cubby blue.

According to the SF website, it's 7 years/126 w/ a 14 million option in 2014.

A lot of money for a guy that only plays every 5 days. Giants are idiots if they think this is going to give them the edge in the West.

I think that's too much regardless of what pitcher it is. I tend to think guys that only play 20% of the games shouldn't be anywhere in the ballpark of the 14-18 million range that elite everyday players get. Just my opinion.

your opinion is true...unfortunately it's not reality.

Wow I guess since they didn't resign Schmidt they figured they needed someone in his spot, maybe they should just keep Bonds on roids and hope he isn't injured for half the season instead of spending money like that.

SF can't keep Bonds now. They can no longer afford the enormous amount of material it takes to make the hat to fit on Bonds over-sized melon.

Some people here under-value a good starting pitcher. They may only play every 5th day but on the 5th day (if they were to go a complete game) they would have done 50% of the work. Remeber thats one guy, and over an entire season with a 5 man rotation, that boils down to 10% when you factor in the offense getting 1/2 the innings.

You need to put a different value (in terms of money) on a player that is on the field 150-162 games a year than someone who plays every 5th game when they are in the elite "superstar" class IMO. Using your example of a pitcher on every fifth day, how many of them have 32-35 CG a year?
If that's the case, should a kicker make as much as a QB or RB in the NFL? I don't believe many, if any, do.

I don't buy into "too much money for a guy who pitches every 5 days". All of is would be pissed if Z wasn't resigned because his salary was too high for pitching every 5 days. I just don't think he's worth that kind of money. Zito peaked a few years ago and hasn't been the same since. He needs a stong pitching coach to coddle him (IE- look at his post Peterson numbers). SF isn't a ever good team. For the money they spent they could have reausigned Schmidt and added a bat.

and people say we overpaid for soriano? wow. zito is a great pitcher but 18 mil a year is ridiculous. we're going to fork over more than that for Z next year something tells me.

No pitcher is worth that money not even Z. I think if we need to get into that kind of money then we let him walk too. I really like Z but never, never give a pitcher more than a four year deal im sorry, and definitely not that kind of money. I hate carpenter but i can appreciate what he did for his team.

I'm in complete agreement 7 years is a long tme for a pitcher (4yrs. with an opt. for 5 is good), but why would you not give him that much money annually?

pay someone more money to play 20% of the season than an allstar to play the whole season and you ask y. As far as carpenter ivy, he is only gettin like 12 mill a year which is alot but he could of gotten more with the going rate now. Baseball is turning into just money no one ever finds any players that play it for the game like the old days. Dont get me wrong money is great and i would take it too but come on you wont sign with a team because there only giving you 100 million instead of 110 mill.

the cards got a great deal with caprenters new contract. that must really be a spectacular place to play because people give a lot of discounts to stay there, and as far as zito is concerned i cant believe anyone would hand out that kind of contract to a fly ball pitcher whos career tendencies have been going the wrong way since 02. the league switch and the stadiums in the NL west will hide some of his inadequacies but i will promise you that this will be an albatross by his age 32 or 33 season. i think the schmidt deal made a whole lot more sense, although he is a longshot at three years too (at least he can dominate on some nights)
