I'm new to the board...so forgive me if this has already been done... but I always think it is interesting to see where people were and their reactions... and their overall thoughts on the "Bartman Play". In my opinion, that was the play that changed the course of history for the Cubs. I don't blame Bartman. I blame Dusty for not getting out there to the mound to settle Prior down and slow the game down.

Me? I was living with my parents for the time being. My dad and I are HUGE Cub fans. I was sitting on the couch, eyes glued to the TV. My heart was racing KNOWING we were sooooo close. Then it happenend. I couldn't talk. I couldn't breathe. My hand over my openend mouth...just thinking "no, no, no". Then the whole downward spiral after the game resumed....Prior's wild pitch, A-Gon's error.... I felt sick, but I couldn't move. As it sunk in, the tears started to flow. They wouldn't stop. My mom..who likes the Cubs, but just because she has no other choice but to watch them when my dad and I are around...she looks at me with the "What is your problem?" look on her face... and has the NERVE to say to me..."Sweetie, it's only a game." My dad and I just looked at her in disbelief that she could even think about saying that right then. She quickly left the room. The next night, wasn't any better. Wood didn't pull through for us. My heart was shattered worse than 1984. After the last out, I felt as if I had lost a dear friend. I was absolutely lost with my time. No Cubs. No Cubs for so long.....

To this day, I have the entire Playoff Series on video tape. I can watch all the way up to the Bartman Play...and after that, I can't bring myself to watch it. I know how it ends. I know what happens, but as I watch it, it just floods back the painful memories of the time we had such hope, and within minutes, those hopes were crushed.

Any thoughts?

I was just watching that inning on youtube. I hate watching it, but part of me just has to.

I was in my living room watching the game when it happened. I was pretty pissed. I'd compare my reaction to Moises Alou's. And at first, and for awhile, I was blaming Bartman for it. But after growing up, I realize he did nothing wrong. He saw a foul ball, and he wanted to catch it, so he went for it. And he wasn't the only person to go for it, he was just the one to touch it. If anything, I blame Alex Gonzalez for dropping the ball that he should of easily handled, and like you said, Dusty for not calming Prior down, and instead just sat on his ***. i've always had that problem with Dusty, he hardly ever left to dugout. He would usually let Searge handle any disputes on the field, and rarely went out for a pitcher change, and I can't remember a time that he himself went out to calm a pitcher down, instead he just sent out Rothschild.

I was listening to Pat and Ron on the radio when I was at work. It crushed me. But what really got me was after game 7, Fox showed an old lady in the stands crying, you could tell she was a diehard fan because she was decked out in Cubbie blue and had a knitted Cubs stocking cap that she proubley made her self with Cubs hat pins all over it. I just thought to myself that this lady has suffered all these years and finally a shade of light then....POOF....GONE. I cried after that and that image of that old lady is still vivid in my mind.

To this day I refuse to watch the replay of the "Bartman" inncident.

And I don't blame Steve Bartman for it, there were other people reaching for the ball as well.

I think it is a shame how people treated him after that.

I know a girl who was at that game. She said everyone was screaming at him, and that every single person in the stands wanted to strangle him.

This is a really good story on him that ESPN ran awhile back ago. It really made me feel really bad for the guy. Not only did that one play change the course of history for the Cubs, but it has changed this guy's life forever.

Probably the Worst moment in 130 years of Cubs history.
Not for what poor Steve Bartman did,but for all the things ryno4ever mentioned that followed. The most damaging,in my opinion, was the routine
groundball that Alex Gonzales botched that would of been a sure D.P.
At that moment I knew we were truly F***ED!!
OH THE HUMANITY!!!!!

I dont blame bartman,I was mad because he had to be protected and relocated because the fans were threatning him.My opinion is that Everyone would of done the same.No one would have said "I better not try to get that ball because alou might catch it".

BTW,Did Anyone see Conan 'OBrian last night? They were making fun of Bartman. It was hilarious.

My point of view still remember it like yesterday.

I was sitting at home, watching the game, had my victory cigar in my mouth, champagne bottle sitting next to me then....Bartman..okay still fine. foul ball that should be caught Alou is pissed, Dusty sitting on his ***..starting to get mad at Dusty, wondering why he isn't out there to calm Prior down. Okay easy double play ball......OH HELL!! why did he muff the play? Gonzales!!(alot of profanity) at that time broke my cigar in half, took my champagne bottle and threw it out into the street at that moment I knew that the Cubs will not win the pennant. I always said if they lost game 6 they are going to lose game 7. My heart broke. I still cant watch any of the NLCS. My insides hurt thinking of that. I still hate the Marlins and I still hate goats.

This is similar to my experience. I was watching it at a sports bar in Phx and I saw an old lady crying. She had ordered some food and it came, but she didn't touch it. I felt so bad for her that I went up to talk to her. Her story was basically what you presumed about the old lady that you saw on FOX. It was heart wrenching. She felt that there was no chance now of a world series win in her lifetime.:(

I wonder how many of the players really understand why we are so passionate about the team. They come and go as players. One season, their allegience may have to be to the Cards...next season, the Cubs...etc. To them, it's baseball...the game. To us fans, it is not just baseball, it is OUR traditions...OUR history.... OUR team. I really think that when a player becomes a member of the Cubs, they need to take a week long history course taught by Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santo and Ryne Sandberg before they can even put on the Cubs uniform. We are not rooting for a World Series for a ring...we want it for the historical value of being a fan when they WIN the Series. Just my opinion.....

Yea I've always wondered how loyal a player can really be to the team, and if they feel the same pain we do.

LSA Anaconda, 60 miles north of Baghdad. I watched exactly 3 games on TV that year. I didnt see the play, I heard about it from the guy that was on duty the night before and told me what happened. I went straight to the internet, read the story and yelled and screamed the rest of the week. I grabbed a bottle of hidden Iraqi made whiskey and took a slug. I was inconsolable.

I think I would have rather read or heard about it instead of actually watching it first hand. So traumatizing! I actually contimplated calling in sick to work the next day...my eyes were so puffy! Didn't think the boss would like that too well, and he wouldn't believe the "sick" story as he is a Cubs fan too!

Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. that is what happened after that play. I was getting ready to leave for work. i left shortly after the botched play by A-Gon and by the time I was 5 minutes down the road 6 runs had scored I think. I was sick to my stomach.

I was sitting on my coffee table in my living room, drinking tons of beer. I just couldn't believe that we were 5 outs away. I had tears in my eyes, believing that we were going to win. I had 5 people call me on my cell phone congratulating me on the World Series trip. Then it happened. I then cried some more. I feel so sorry for that Bartman guy. It was a night of strong mixed emotions.

I was watching the game with my dad at our house, yep, I still live with dad! I had an ice cold Pepsi in 1 hand and a Papa John's Pizza in the other. After the Bartman play, the pizza ended up on the TV! I was mad as hell!
