Cubs To Sign Joey Gathright
Word from WSCR 670 in Chicago is that the Cubs will sign outfielder Joey Gathright. We've heard the same from a source. Gathright, 28 in April, was non-tendered by the Royals on Friday.

I'd like to see a starting OF of Fukudome/Johnson/Gathright when Z starts so the cubs sp would have a higher slugging percentage than all three OF
hey at least he play's good defense and is fast and makes contact and really important stuff like that.

The offseason from hell continues. I'm not sure which was more impressive: Gathright's .311 OBP last season, or his .272 SLG. Up next, Milton Bradley. Dam Big Jim, I used to really like you.

Sounds like Pie is going somewhere via trade?

I could see the Cubs trading Pie for a LOOGY if he doesn't 'breakout' in ST. It'd be extremely dumb, but I can see them doing it

Well, it may not have been his fault, but he spent half the off-season again playing patty-cake with another GM.

Who would you like Hendry to sign?

One of Lou's former players. Is he looking at past glory or looking forward ??
I am really beginning to wonder.

just because he isnt signed everyone under the sun doesnt mean he doesnt know what he is doing. It's not about signing alot of players. It's about signing the right players. It's also about trading for the right players. Now the Cubs are going to trade Pie, who is just as good as Gathright. And is a former stud prospect who never really got a chance. The Cubs have lost 2 top 10 prospects this offseason. Overpaid for Dempster. Overpaid for Gregg(Ceda). And are about to overpay for Milton Bradley. The Cubs won as many games as they did last season on the backs of some career years that will not be matched next season(Dempster, DeRosa), and young players who will have to prove they can do it again(Soto, Theriot). The Cubs got worse this offseason so far. And that's counting Bradley(inevitable).

At this point I don't see a big difference between Dunn, Bradley, and Abreu.
I think I've made it clear who I favor, but there's going to be major flaws in all three of them from bad defense and declining numbers due to age to health. I think you go with the one that's least expensive.
If he doesn't sign one of the them, the next best thing would be to throw a trade together for a young OF like Hermida, DeJesus, or McClouth who would be more expensive. Trading your top trading pieces piecemeal for relief pitchers is not the way I would go. Do we know if Pie will be traded?? no. However based on evidence from the past two years, its hard to get back on the Lou bandwagon if he kicks you off.
Hendry got lucky with Edmonds and Reed Johnson last year; maybe that balanced out Fukudome's June-Oct slump. But It'd be foolhardy to count on players picked off the trash heap again. If Pie is used as part of a bigger trade for a RF,CF, or SP this signing will look alot different, as Gathright would be a good 25th man due to excellent defense and speed as late-inning pinch runner. IF PIe is spun away for some LOOGY or spare parts, it will be kind of pointless. Just my opinoin, I guess

No Dunn he stinks defensively. He is the worst player ever in the oufield. I would rather have Henry Rodriquez out there. O'Henry stunk but Dunn is worse.
The has not been a ton of movement yet this offseason. The guys signed or traded were not going to the Cubs. There will be moves but the right moves.
As far as the outfield goes I prefer Bradley because he has some fire/attitude. The Cubs team homoed out of the playoffs 2 years in a row. There was zero passion maybe he can bring it I dont know but it is better than 3 and out again.

Bradley would be better than the other options , we will just be rolling the dice on his ability to stay healthy. The guy I wanted went early , Holiday.

You can say what you will about Gathright as a ballplayer... but, uh, the man knows how to jump cars. Apparently. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cySfw8f0beg

He might do well in parkour (free-running, where runners do acrobatic stunts with anything available in their environment). Let's see him, though, do that with a running car like Kobe allegedly did in a YouTube video.

.
Well then you obviously don't want Abreu out there either, because he is just as bad as Dunn on defense, will be entering the latter half of his 30s with declining power numbers and is looking for upwards of 4 yrs/$50 million
So that leaves us with Bradley or some sort of trade acquisition.

If Pie wasn't already gone, he is now. But given that he's out of options, I'm very much hoping Jim already had a deal lined up for Pie before he signed Gaithright.

I am beginning to think that the trade window on Pie ( to get any value out of him ) has shut .
