Manager Lou Piniella said Saturday that Carlos Marmol and Kevin Gregg will compete for closer duties during spring training.
Marmol is the assumed closer and Piniella indicated that he definitely has the upper hand, but he added that he wants to "let them compete." "I feel comfortable with Marmol, no question," Piniella said. "But remember, we traded for this other young man and he was a closer with success, so give him a chance too." Marmol owners can't like hearing that, but he remains the clear favorite for the job.
