View Full Version : Your favorite part of Wrigley Field.....

Mine has to be the scoreboard. Something about how it rises above everything...and tells so many stories....some present some past. The fact that it is still manually run... how, when you first get to Wrigley, you look at the flags and it prepares you as to what kind of game you are in for.... how it tells not only our scores, but scores around baseball.... how the green blends in with the rest of the color scheme of such a beautiful field. And of course, how it displays the "W" flag proudly after a win! I have only been to one night game, but I was absolutely in such awe of how beautiful everything was under the lights...especially the scoreboard, I found it hard to concentrate on the game.

I've actually never been to a night game at Wrigley. I think I should go to one. But my favorite part has to be the ivy. It's such a huge characteristic of Wrigley. I love how it changes with the season. It starts off brown at the begining of the season, then turns into that lush thick green, and as the season comes to an end, the green dies down.
The scoreboard would be next. I love that fact that it's still manually operated. Not too many of those around anymore. I think Fewnway is the only other one if I'm not mistaken. I still remember at my first game when my dad was showing me what all the stuff on the board meant, like the balls and strikes, and the other teams scores. Such a great place.
I seriously think that if they ever do make a new field, that those two things need to be kept. But I'd rather that they keep Wrigley instead. I have no idea what I'll do if I find out they're tearing it down.

I also like the flags that surround the top of the building.... how each flag represents someone and their accomplishments. Everything in Wrigley just seems so symbolic and historic!

The steps. I was running up them when I was 8 and tripped. 7 stiches in my chin at the first aid station. I've bled at Wrigley.

My favorite part about Wrigley (as weird as it sounds) is the walk from the El building to the stadium. It feels like you're stepping into another world, so intoxicating :)

Hell no! It was my first game and I wasn't missing it for anything. Ryno hit a 2 run shot to beat the Expos that day.

Yeah...it is an awesome feeling...just as it is when the El is coming to a stop at Addison, and you see a sea of blue and white under you on the streets... then you see the lights. Such a rush!

I dont know how you would classify mine, but for me its the stairs leading up to the field from the lower concorse next to the gift shop. I get many chills walking up those steps and seeing the whole ballpark, and knowing this is where I belong.

That is when Wrigley field drives your senses crazy....you see the green, you smell the ballpark smells of hotdogs, onions, and beer... you hear the crowd buzzing and you can absolutely feel the electricity! I know your feeling. When I retire...I want to be one of those senior citizen ushers who get PAID to be at Wrigley Field every day!

I once told my boss that I wanted to take off April-October so I could be a Wrigley Field usher for a season. He just laughed and said, You'd be too busy yelling at the second baseman for not making a double play, after thinking about it he was right. I dont even think I could do the job at 70 either..lol

Yea I've been considering being like a peanut vender over the summer so I can watch the games there and get paid doing it. But I'd sweat my *** off and have to carry a huge bag of peanuts, so I'm not sure yet.

I wonder how to do that. Or maybe I could try to be one of those guys that just sits on a chair in foul territory and tosses foul balls to the fans. Now that's as close to the action as you could get!

Does anyone remember Marla Collins...back in the 80's...as one of the "ballgirls"? Harry had such a thing for her! http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h220/hmcalvey/marlacollins.jpg

I have an audio clip of Harry saying "Well, today we get to see Marla Collins without her shorts on"...and Steve Stone just starts rolling...laughing uncontrollably. Now, I'm not sure if this clip was because she was wearing pants that day, or if it was after she posed for Playboy, which ultimately led to her being fired by the Cubs.

If that was anywhere passed the second inning Harry was already a 12 pack in and beyond the point of caring anymore. Some of the things that guy used to say was just hilarious. I must say that when he was in the booth and the Cubs hit a walk of Homer I think to here the excitement in his voice has to be my favorite Cubs moments.

What I love most about Wrigley is,besides a few minor additions and changes it remains much the same as it was the first time I walked up the stairs, from the concorse, holding my Dad's hand, and the first site of the field, and ivy,and scoreboard hit me. Being this was before everyone had color T.V.,and I had only seen a game in black and white, the colors to a 7 or 8 year old were
unreal. The sites, sounds, and smells are what actually brings me back in time
every time I still go to a game at the "Friendly Confines"
It is like a shrine or Church, and a sort of time capsule, and I hope it is around forever!! I'm old enough to remember sitting in the first row of the center field bleachers, with my Dad,for a doubleheader against the Pirates[1966,or 67].That was before juniper bushes,or even the basket.

Of all of the games I have gone, my favorite one was the game I took my five year old son to Wrigley for the first time. His eyes were as big as the baseballs...watching the birth of a true Cub fan was amazing. After that game, he watches every single game with me. If they are when he is at school, we watch the tape of them that night, win or lose. I don't tell him what happens in the outcome. But that day, it was truly beautiful. His excitement and wonder was incredible. A day I will hold in my heart until I die. The game was unforgettable as well because it was when Kerry Wood got into a yelling match with the umpires and was tossed from the game, and in protest, the bleacher bums used the outfield for a trash can. They had to stop the game so the grounds crew could pick up the trash.

Nice story. I can't wait to help my kids become Cubs fans someday. And trust me, they will know Wrigley. Sounds weird, but it really is a magical place. They need to make sure to keep it around as long as possible.

I don't think you ever forget your 1st trip to Wrigley Field. Mine was on September 23, 1983. I remember my grandparents taking me into Chicago to see the Cubs. I never really knew who the Cubs were I was only about 7 so I didn't care, all I remember is my grandpa always yelling at some team on TV to score for christ's sake..lol. They took me into the ballpark (still not impressed by the way) I walked up those steps on the lower concorse for the 1st time and then it hit me..WOW I have never seen anything like that in my life! the green of the grass and ivy, the huge scoreboard in center, the flags on the roof, baseball players in white with blue numbers, the organ playing music, Harry singing it had to be the best place on earth. I think thats when I fell in love with the Cubs, Mel Hall hit a game winning double against the Pirates that day so I still think of that day and thank my grandpa for making me who I am today a loyal, diehard, true blue Chicago Cubs fan.

I have to say, I went to the home opener, and as I walked up the steps of the concourse, for the umpteenth time, it STILL took my breath away! I'm going back on May 10th and can't wait!
My heart started pumping hard when I stepped off the El and smelled the "baseball smells"...the grills from the rooftops, the hot dogs cooking.... I never realized just how much Wrigleyville affects your senses.

The atmosphere around Wrigley is totally amazing. I can't imagine my life without it. Even in middle of winter one day me and my wife were in Chicago I just said hell I am going to Wrigley just to walk around it.my wife thought I was nuts but hey I am a Cubs fan. I park at McDonalds and walk over on Waveland and some guys that were on the rooftop of one of the apartments said "Hey dude you a Cub fan?" I said yeah they invited me up to the rooftop and I saw Wrigley from the top. I said I fell in love all over again. The way this team and its park grabs you its amazing. Its no wonder its called an addiction.

Mesmerizing.... and you cannot truly appreciate the beauty of it all until you are there. There is no feeling in the world like walking up the steps of the concourse...and once you reach the top step, it's like when Dorothy walks out of her house in the Land of Oz! Sheer beauty....breathtaking.... spine tingling, goose bump giving excitement and awe.
