After a relatively dormant stretch in negotiations, talks between Cubs general manager Jim Hendry and the representative for free-agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez moved into overdrive the last 36 hours, with agent Paul Kinzer insisting Friday night the club would get a hometown discount and saying there was a ''50-50 chance'' a deal could be reached by today.

Today also marks the last chance the Cubs have at exclusive rights in dealing with Ramirez. If he isn't signed by today, Ramirez will be free to talk with other teams beginning Sunday. At that point, Kinzer said, Ramirez will be seeking at least a six-year deal.

''If we hit the market, basically, we are looking at six or seven years,'' Kinzer told the Sun-Times. ''Some people have put him as the No. 1 free agent on the market. I certainly feel that way, and obviously I'm biased, but I don't think I'm alone.''

Kinzer said Ramirez would be seeking a contract similar to the seven-year, $119 million package center fielder Carlos Beltran signed with the New York Mets two years ago. That's the range free-agent outfielder Alfonso Soriano -- also high on the Cubs' wish list -- reportedly is seeking.

But Kinzer stressed the Cubs could get Ramirez for less -- even if he hits the open market on Sunday.

''There will be a hometown discount,'' Kinzer said. ''They definitely want to keep him, and that is still his No. 1 choice. Jim knows where we stand.''

Ramirez, 28, hit .291 with 38 home runs and 119 RBI last season. He has averaged 35 home runs and 105 RBI the last three seasons -- all with the Cubs. The four-year, $42 million contract he signed on Opening Day 2005 allowed him to opt for free agency after the 2006 season. Ramirez did just that, walking away from the remaining two years and $22.5 million guaranteed in his contract.

Ramirez's status was a major topic discussed by Cubs officials during their weeklong organizational meetings that wrapped up Friday in Mesa, Ariz.

Kinzer and Hendry had dinner together Thursday in Arizona and were scheduled to have another round of late-night talks Friday over the phone. Kinzer said there has been ''significant'' progress in his negotiations with the Cubs.

Hendry maintained his stance of not commenting on free-agent discussions.

The Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers are also expected to pursue Ramirez if he hits the market on Sunday. Kinzer said he has been contacted by ''about nine teams.''

Kinzer also confirmed he discussed free-agent pitcher Vicente Padilla with Hendry during their dinner meeting.

Padilla, 29, went 15-10 with a 4.50 ERA for the Texas Rangers last season. The right-hander is high on the Cubs' wish list.

Kinzer said Padilla likely will be seeking at least a four-year deal. After earning a career-high 15 victories last season, Padilla is expected to seek a minimum of $10 million annually.

Oh no question, if a deal isn't done by tonight I guarantee you he wears an Angels jersey. One good thing about being in Vegas is I get the Angels games and there sports reports so I keep tabs on them. They have the biggest boner for him it's not even funny lol, we have to get this done today or we might have to trade for a Blaylock or B Level 3B stop gap.

To this point I'm betting money isn't the problem, it's years.

I bet Kinzer is asking 6 @ 85-90. I'm just speculating but I think if their close enough something will get done.

If it's only one year getting in the way, I say give it to him. He'll only be 34 at that time not 40...lol

I agree, I mean his legs and health were fine last year. He was committed during the off-season and busted his butt to be in better shape and his defense has gotten better every year he's been here. Even the people who said it was Lee had to shut up when he went down and his Defense was still good. As for the whole he sometimes is lazy, he might not hustle a play 3 times a year big frickin deal. Most of the time he does and if he does that just to make sure he doesn't reaggravate the quads I'm fine with it. He's here to jack the long ball and hit 300 not be Jose Reyes lol.

Also say year 5 of his deal when he's 33 the numbers start to go down it won't be impossible to deal him I mean 3B is probably the toughest position to get quality production out of besides catcher. There's only about 10 in baseball who you can consider above average and he's easily top 4 in the game at his position.

When Lee went down the whole offense went down, not just Aramis.

Hustle.....If people are referring him not hustling in '04 and '05 remember he had a quad and hammy problem. I would baby it too.

In '05 he played with that quad injury and **** near blew it out when hustling out a ground ball.

That shelved him rest of the season.

Last year he hustled a lot more then past years.

I agree, I think people who try to bash him do it for two reasons. One they think Aram is going to bail so they start to bash him so they convince themselves the loss isn't that significant or two they need a scapegoat for why we were the worst team in the NL last year and since he's the best player not with an injury it must be all his fault or the reason we lost and it's stupid.

Yea the whole team went in a funk after Lee's injury. Even Z wasn't pitching good right away.

I'm going to be twiddling my thumbs and glued to the computer most of the day waiting for a Aramis announcement...lol:D

Aram knows himself that he's a lazy a-ss and he knows Sweet Lou won't stand for it. He's probably looking for another "let me do anything I want to do" manager like Dusty. If he chooses to go, screw him. We don't need any more "it's all about me" players on this team. Go Cubs! My 36th year, it's gotta happen soon. I think hiring Lou is the best move this team has ever made. We will win it all within the next 3 years.:D

yes because working to greatly improve his defense since coming over from Pittsburgh and working real hard last off-season to strengthen his lower body is a product of being lazy.
