After 30 minutes of cooling off, I would like to apologize to Kevin Gregg. He is doing the best he can, unfortunately he is just an average closer. The game really boils down to the offense again. I mean the Padres had about 3 guys in their lineup tonight that most fans had actually heard of, while our offense cant hit a sub 500 pitcher with 4.5 ERA.

One cant be a closer that allows a HR one out every 4 times he goes out there. Again though 1 run off the Padres P.

Can we use Guzman as a closer? Right now he is the most reliable pitcher in the pen. The only problem I see is that if we use him, it may be a problem GETTING to him as a closer.
The offense was absolutely PATHETIC! I'm almost afraid to go back and see just how many men have been left on base in the last week alone!

Just got a bunch of twitter updates sent to my phone. I didn't hear the postgame show... but Lou has announced that on Tuesday he will name the new closer. Kevin Gregg has lost his job.
from the tribune:
SAN DIEGO - Lou Piniella has finally seen enough.
After Kevin Gregg gave up four two-out runs in the ninth inning in a 4-1 loss to the Padres on Monday night, Piniella said he plans on removing Gregg from the closer's role.
"I think we're going to make some changes as far as what we're going to do in late innings," Piniella said. "We'll have some more tomorrow."
Piniella didn't say who would be his new closer, though Carlos Marmol and Angel Guzman are considered the likeliest candidates.
Gregg blew his sixth save of the year and third in August, giving up a tying double to Chase Headley, and, after an intentional walk, a three-run homer to Kyle Banks. It was about as tough a loss as the Cubs have suffered.
"I can name a few of them, believe me," Piniella said. "They all end the same way, with a home run ball."
It was the 12th home run Gregg has given up, putting the Cubs six games behind St. Louis.
"It sucked," Gregg said. "I wasn't pitching. I went away from what I wanted to do, didn't executive my pitches and cost us the game."
Told that Piniella was going to make changes, Gregg said: "I could see why he's (ticked). I'd be (ticked). I'm (Ticked) right now. That's a crappy effort I just put forth on the field. I could have regrouped. I still have to get people out."

Ditto.
This is the oddest damn thing I have ever seen. How the hell can all of our hitters slump at the same time.
I have a friend who has always said " the Cubs are losers with a loser mentality ". I thought this was simplistic stupid and impossible. How could known winners and hard players get a loser mentality once they join the Cubs ? Altho I don't believe it is completely accurate it is not quite as ridiculous to me now.

Ive said it most of the year- they just dont play winning baseball. And please dont think Im saying winning baseball is small ball because its not. Critical AB last night was Lee with a runner on third less than 2 away. Its hard to blame Lee for anything this season but that run has to be driven in. He grounds out to third and the runner stays put. Aram comes up and walks. The thing about Arams walk is that he had two good pitches to hit in that sequence. Our pitchers tend to walk players that cant hit- Eckstein and groove players that can hurt you.

Yeah, i am about ready to stick a fork in this team because they are done.
Bad hitting with runners in scoring position has been our glaring weaknes all year. That hasn't changed, and now our pen goes defunct.
