Baker's ESPN job has out for managing

By Mark Gonzales

An invigorated Dusty Baker confirmed Wednesday that he has finalized a two-year contract with ESPN.

"It's a great opportunity to take my experiences and knowledge as a player and manager and put it into broadcasting," said Baker, whose contract wasn't renewed by the Cubs after four seasons. "A number of other managers—Lou Piniella, Bob Brenly, Larry Bowa and Buck Showalter—have taken this route and shared their perspective on things. I'm excited about this partnership."

Baker, 57, has a clause in his contract that allows interested teams to contact him as a managerial candidate. Baker's contract calls for him to serve as a studio analyst in Bristol, Conn., and on the West Coast, as well as for him to work 10 regular-season games and the postseason.

He also will work the Little League World Series, an assignment he relishes.

Baker posted a 1,162-1,041 record in 14 seasons (nine winning years) with the Giants and Cubs, earning three National League Manager of the Year honors.

But despite winning the 2003 NL Central title and posting winning records in two of four seasons with the Cubs, Baker was dismissed in the wake of injuries and chaos the last two seasons.

"I'm going to be myself," said Baker, who has served as an analyst for ESPN in the past. "I'm going to call the game the way I see it, but I understand how tough the game is to play and how it is to be ripped.

"But I know as a manager that you're going to make decisions that leave you open to being second-guessed. This is 39 years that I've been in the game. I've seen a lot, but I haven't seen it all."

The Cubs' $300 million-plus commitment this winter wasn't lost on Baker, who was relegated to working with a brittle starting rotation during his final two seasons.

"Looking back, it makes you a little distraught," Baker said. "They made a lot of moves. It makes you wonder, but you get over it. I like Lou. There are a lot of guys I'm pulling for over there."

Nothing wrong with him getting a job... I have never enjoyed watching ESPN cover Cubs games (they hate the Cubs).... but now even more so, if we have to sit and listen to Dusty analyze the game! How can ESPN hire someone who has the word "Dude" come out at least one time per sentence???

Will they let him on the air with his toothpicks? It does have to get to him though, that as soon as he was out the door, the Cubs opened the checkbook up!

They hate anyone who doesn't have a B or a NY on their uniform. Basically they favor all the east coast teams.

Their anouncers annoy me as well, I'd like to punch Scott VanPelt in the face, he just looks like a snake in the grass and don't even get me started on Chris Berman!!!

Can you imagine the first time ESPN carries a Cubs/Cards or Cubs/Sox game this year and Dusty is on the air!?!?

Dusty has to do something to keep him occupied. No reason to hate ESPN.

I would never hate ESPN, if it wasn't in existance I am sure I wouldn't know half of my sports facts.

Have you ever listened to them cover a Cubs game? Very Very ANTI Cub! This year, I am going to see just how long it takes after they start broadcasting before they mention Bartman! He is usually mentioned numerous times throughout the games they cover. As does fox!

I agree they are very anti-cub. But once the cubs win a WS they won't be.

They are all high on the Yankees and Red Sox

I hate fox commentators

I don't hate ESPN,but I do hate Joe Morgan!!
No broadcaster anywhere is more of a Cub basher. He really pisses me off any time Ryno's name comes up!! Morgan seems to think he's the only guy who played secondbase in the history of the game!!

i tell you one thing that bugged me was when they let harold reynolds go over an accussation, but they keep micheal irvin no matter how many times he get in trouble. So if they wouldn't have let reynolds go there wouldn't really be a need for dusty.

So Harold Reynolds gets canned for giving a chick a hug. I heard recently that Sean Salsbury took pictures of his weiner on his cell phone and sent them to coworkers/chicks. Anyone heard this?

I couldn't agree with you anymore. Joe Morgan is such a joke and I hate hearing him bash the Cubs as much as he can in a game so I mute the TV when he is broadcasting.

"Baseball Tonight" has not been the same since H.R. was canned.
How bad was Tino Martinez? He looked like a deer in the headlights!!
