I have been a Cub fan since I was 16 years old,and to put in in perspective,Im now 70 years old.In addition to being a fan of all Chicago teams(not Sox),I enjoy riding roller coasters with my wife, and Cedar Point is my favorite place in the world.I would love sharing my old Cub memories with fellow fans.I'm retired from UARCO Inc.,live in Kewanee, but went to HS at Lane Tech which was a couple miles west of Wrigley. My favorite players when I first became a fan were,Hank Sauer,Bill Serena,Warren Hacker,Paul Minner and Bob Rush.I saw Ernie play when he was a rookie and think that Aram is a better player than Santo, although he might never be as popular.Billy Williams was the best left handed hitter as a Cub who I can recall.I also think that Stan Musial was the best player I ever saw at Wrigley field.Overall IMO Mickey Mantle was the greatest player of my lifetime.Thats about all.If you need more info...ask,Im friendly.:p

Welcome, again, mickey!! As I said in an earlier post, glad I'm not the only
Fogpog member with an AARP card,LOL.
I've been a Cub fan for about forty years now,and have been lucky enough
to have spent more days[and nights] at Wrigley than I can count.
Back in the early 70's,when bleacher seats went on sale the day of the game,
and cost $1.00,I was a regular in the left field bleachers.
[sometimes more than I was a regular at school!]
I love talking Cubs baseball and love sharing my memories and the memories of other fans young and old.
I agree with you that "Sweet Swingin'"Billy Williams was the best left handed hitter the Cubs have had,at least that I've seen play.
But,I have to disagree with your Santo and Rameriz comparison.
IMO,Rameriz is the best thirdsacker the Cubs have had since Santo, but he is not better than Santo.Aram,is a good fielding thirdbaseman.Santo was a
Terrific fielder, winning multiple Gold Gloves. They're not even close with the leather. Rameriz is a terrific hitter,I might even say an overall better hitter than Santo, but not that much better when you compare the era that Ronnie played.Anyway, look forward to swapping old "War stories"with you.

Sometimes I think that for sentimental reasons,we have a hard time giving up our old heroes, but without checking,I would bet you a buck that Ramirez's FA compares favorably with Santo's.At least since he's been a Cub.I remember that he was a butcher when he was a Pirate, but people improve if they work at it and are motivated.I remember how Billy Williams went from atrocious to very good in LF.They actually on occasion used Billy in CF.
What is a fact though,Ron was much more a fan favorite than Aramis will ever be.

I will admit that Growing up in the 60's and early 70's,Santo was my favorite player. But Ramirez is one of my favorite players on the present team, and I
think he's one of the best players in the NL.
I will also agree that when comparing batting stats,Aramis might have an edge. But I can,t see how anyone who saw Santo and Ramirez play thirdbase could even compare the two.Aramis is much improved from his Pirate days, and a pretty steady thirdsacker, but he is not even close to the fielder Ronnie was.
Gold Gloves:
Santo-5
Ramirez-0
All Star Games:
Santo-9
Ramirez-0

Actually, Aramis did play in an All-Star game in '05. He was the starting third baseman, along with DLee starting at first. Scott Rolen was supposed to start at third, but was injured (hallelujah), so ARam got to go!:D It made me very happy!

I thought he had.Its almost sacrilegious to say what I said about Ron v Aramis. As a personality I love Ronnie, but in my humble opinion,i really think at this point in his career,Aramis is better.Of course, its a matter of opinion. If not for Rollens reputation,I suspect Ramirez might have at least one gold glove.Once a guy gets a rep as "hands of steel",its pretty hard to get to the GG level.

I stand corrected,I forgot about Ramierz replacing Rolen when he was hurt and could not play.I think I've tried to forget about as much of the last couple seasons as I could!:o

Mickeyrom,in your 50 plus years of watching baseball, who do you think was the best all around thirdbaseman you ever saw.
The best,IMO,was Mike Schmidt of the Phillies.

Hmmmm....thats really a tough one.Boyer great, the guy with the Orioles had the best glove. In my lifetime I saw mostly National league.Al Dark was good, but not really great.Penguin was outstanding.I would definitely have Santo and Ramirez in my top 10,but I just cant think of one who I would say was the best. How about Eddie Matthews too?Isn't he in the HOF?I honestly dont remember how well he could field, but man he could hit.

Thanks for the welcome.Lane Tech always had a bit higher admission rules, but the best I remember I got in based on my grammar school grades.I had two kids that went to Lane and graduated, one was of average intelligence, and one brilliant. The first one got there by working hard.At the time I was there,it was pretty hard to graduate .Even the general course required Algebra,Geometry,Physics and Chemistry over the course of the four years. No "basketweaving" classes there.

Were you thinking of Brooks Robinson at third for the O's of the 1960s? The left field stands near third base at old Municipal Stadium was called Brooks' Corner during baseball season, but I can't recall which Colt receiver had the corner to himself during the football season.
