Last dance for Chief Illiniwek
University of Illinois will drop mascot
By Stacey Baca

February 16, 2007 - After 81 years, the University of Illinois will drop its American Indian mascot, Chief Illiniwek. The final performance will be at the last men's basketball home game Wednesday.

"Obviously, I'm disappointed. I liked the chief. I like the tradition. It's part of not only Illinois athletics but the university. It's a symbol. But at the same time I understand how difficult this decision was," said Coach Weber.
The chief triggered an emotional stand-off. Native American groups and others complained for years that it was a demeaning representation of their culture. There were others, however, who believe the chief honors Native Americans.
The debate sparked protests, and, eventually, in 2005 the NCAA determined that Illiniwek was offensive and barred the university from hosting postseason events. On Thursday, the NCAA sent the university a letter saying that the school would no longer be banned from hosting postseason events if it drops the chief. The university has agreed to do so.

Joseph B. White, the university's president issued a written statement that the decision "is for the good of our student-athletes and our university. It is time to come together and move on to the next chapter in the history of this distinguished institution."

There was a last-ditch court effort to save the chief Friday. Two students who now portray the chief - Dan Maloney and Logan Ponce - filed an injunction to stop the university's plan. It was denied.

"We really thought the two students, Dan and Logan, would be favored in this decision. It's a big disappointment for us," said Howard Wakefield, member of Honor the Chief.

Steve Raquel, a former Chief Illiniwek, hopes the end of the chief will develop into something new.

"While we're sad, we're hopeful that they will bring a closure, a respectful closure to the tradition and also be open to what a new tradition could look like," said Raquel.

The university will still be able to use the name Illini and Fighting Illini. But the chief is gone after Wednesday's game. At this point it's unclear if the university will replace Chief Illiniwek with a different mascot.

This ticks me off! If I was Indian it wouldn't bother me. It's to honor them not to make fun of them. I have no idea what the new mascot could be! Anyone have any ideas?

PC crap really pisses me off. Native American groups complained it offends their culture. Tht's ridiculous... You know what offends Native American culture? Drunk Native Americans, not team name or mascot. It's friggin' silly.

In NY, St. Johns chnged their name from the Redmen to the Red Storm, and i pissed me off as well. People are overly sensitive...

Hofstra University recently changed their name from the Flying Dutchman to the Pride. That ws probably because the first name ws actually worse then naming a team the Pride. Sounds like WNBA team...

As an Irish American should the Notre Dame Fighting Irish offend me?

Okay, I'm done...

The high school here in Grand Rapids had to change their name from Indians to Thunderhawks because the natives up here raised such a huge fuss and my wife's old high school Deer River High School also had to change their mascot because of it.

It's because FSU appealed to the NCAA and won, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida actually endorces the FSU nickname.

Our local news is going to cover Chief Illiniwek's last dance tonight. How sad. I didn't go to U of I, but I am sure that there are a lot of disappointed Alumni out there today!

I for one am glad to see Illiniwek gone. He's been nothing but trouble for Illinois and its Big Ten opponents. I remember when I was going to the real UI (University of Iowa), negative depictions of Illiniwek got a few student groups in trouble during one homecoming week. Those who have Native American mascots are just looking for trouble.

I honestly, am for it, and against it. It is a mascot, yes I understand. It is also their school symbol. I don't know how else to say it, but if I was in one of those tribes, such as the Seminoles, I would be quite upset. I guess, I just don't know what to say, look at all the high schools and colleges taht are named after tribes.

I have to question on where you draw the line. So, what's next? Do we start changing the names of our cities and states? Some of them are named after native american tribes.

Yeah, I understand what you are saying. Good question, where do we draw the line?

But alot of the cities is where they were originally from. But, I'm not sure.

The Seminoles actually dont mind...they are involved with Florida St. and could care less....But if it offends the tribe get rid of it. Illinois made the right choice....GO HAWKS!

I know what you mean! Thats like Swedish people getting offended by Swedish Fish candy and Irish people getting offended by Lucky Charms. People are too sensitive these days! I hope he dances again in the future...I heard they had a chance to appeal it.

Well, if it goes to the Supreme Court, they could act in favor of the students, because it affects their educations. The two guys who play Illiniwek get college music credit for the performances.

I agree with you Slammin--people are to sensitive and the world today is to concerned about offending people. It is a shame that the chief will no longer dance. It has been a great tradition at Illinois that was performed with class and respect.
