A serious question

The terrorist network Al-Qaida will likely leverage its contacts and capabilities in Iraq to mount an attack on U.S. soil, according to a new National Intelligence Estimate on threats to the United States.

Exactly what does that mean? What does" leverage it's contacts" mean?
Is this just goobledygook designed to frighten us or what?

It may be designed to frighten us. Which is a good idea to me. The farther we get from Sept 11th, the more Americans seem to forget and become to relaxed. We need to be reminded from time to time that the threat is still real and we need to be ready at all times.

it means that they are moving into position to deploy their sleeper cells (and let there be no doubt that they exist). we had an attack in glasgow (and an attempted attack in london) a fortnight ago, and both were largely failures because intelligence services had been on their tail and knew they had something planned imminently.

this new message may be in part designed to warn al-qaeda that the CIA/FBI in fact already know their plans.

eric - cant say ive heard that expression, so i wouldnt be able to say. think 'brush' without the 's', i guess. it seriously drives us round the bend when y'all (and i have yet to encounter an american who doesnt) say 'edinborrow' instead.

mickey - i also hope you're not one of the few a year (my little sis works at the castle and they do keep track) who claim to have 'discovered' they're descended from greyfriars bobby. greyfriars bobby is of course a dog....

The whole idea of terrorism is to "frighten" or "terrify" people. My philosophy regarding these criminals is treat them as they are, criminals. If you look at the way the British handle this cancer heading west, you will see they handle them with great detective work and grinding out every possible lead while trying not to let the "terrorists" change their way of life, although its kinda impossible at times. Getting to your question, the recent NIE is fairly bi-partisan so most of the time its pretty accurate (Heck it better be with over half of my taxes going to the military/intelligence infrastructure). I don't care what criminal groups say their going to do, given we should be proactive in the deaths of Bin Laden and others of his ilk. I think its pointless but for future reference, we were attacked by a group of international criminals, with the intent to scare us, kill us and to sink our economy. One thing that we REALLY need to be reminded of, is that in our search for a false sense of security, some of the extremely frightened tend to trade some basic rights (Habeas Corpus was nice while it lasted) outlined in the constitution.

As truly great American once said "People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both".

I think he was correct.
