A-Ram to win Hank Aaron Award

Aramis Ramirez expected to be named winner of Hank Aaron Award

By Dave van Dyck, 3:28 p.m.

PHILDELPHIA The Cubs' Aramis Ramirez is expected to be named winner of the National League Hank Aaron Award, presented by major league baseball for offensive statistics, prior to Game 4 of the World Series Sunday night.

Ramirez hit .289 with 27 homers and 111 RBI. He is a surprise winner, considering he did not even have the best offensive statistics in the National League at his position, third base. The Mets' David Wright hit 33 homers and drove in 124 runs while hitting .302.

And Ramirez's numbers pale in comparison to the Cardinals' Albert Pujols, who hit .357 with 37 homers and 116 RBI.

But for the first time, fans voting at MLB.com picked the winner, which explains the reason Ramirez won.

Wright was not even the Mets' nominee; Jose Reyes was.

And Pujols plays the Cardinals, a team which does not have the nationwide fan of the Cubs.

When the award was created nearly a decade ago, it was based on statistics, which explains why Barry Bonds won three times and Alex Rodriguez four.

Another reason fans should not be allowed to vote on anything. As if the All Star voting isn't terrible enough every year. I'm a huge fan of Aramis. But he was not the best hitter in the NL. Heck he wasn't the best hitter at his position this season(David Wright). Fans account for I believe 30% of this awards vote. I guess Cubs fans nudged him into the winners circle. Oh well. It's not like any Cubs players were voted into getting any other undeserving honors this past season right? Oh wait, Soriano and Fukudome were voted to start in the All Star game. My bad!

I agree. Fan voting must go. If the game counts, let the Manager of the All-Star team pick his team. He is going to want to pick the guys best suited to win.

I don't care what anyone says, I'm happy he won. I've had a $hitty month and this is making me feel better! Maybe Rammy's '08 numbers weren't up where they've been in recent years, but there have been a couple of times where he should have won this before. He was good enough to be considered and in the running for this award and he won. As far as I'm concerned he had a great year in almost every way. He didn't hit well in the playoffs, but no one else on our team did either. I look at the positive and to have Aramis win this is getting him some of the recognition that he rightfully deserves. So, I'm going to drink a little champagne to celebrate!
