The Cubs new brass have made some strong moves this off-season... But the best move they made was not wasting money on free-agents from this class. Their decision to allow LeHair to start at first base, while Rizzo gets some seasoning in the minors, was the right call. LeHair has torn the cover off the ball in winter ball. And though I'm not saying that it will definitely translate to a long, productive 2012 season... I do believe that he's done enough to earn his shot.

The same holds for Rizzo. He came up once and fell on his face so he is far from a sure thing. The nice thing about this spring , and into the season , we should have honest battles for a position , as opposed to the phoney ones we had in the past .

No prospect is a sure thing - although it is a great luxury to have the top ranked first base prospect in all of baseball. However, you can't hold last season against Rizzo. He was just 21, and was not even close to being ready. Our new GM, who was Rizzo's GM in San Diego, admitted he brought him up way too soon.

The Cubs rebuilding of the farm system, continues...

Gerardo Concepcion, via Cuba, was recently signed by the Cubs. Baseball American has Concepcion slated as the Cubs 6th best prospect.

Yea for the first major league experience for a 21-y/o who spent considerable time and effort in the minors battling cancer and chemo side effects and playing in the least hitter-friendly ballpark in the majors he was terrible :-)

yea, a crazy Samardzija-like deal for an 18-y/o. These kids sure come out of Cuba with a working knowledge of capitalism. I guess ths is the last year teams can spend unlimited $$$ in international free agent markets, so might as well.

Can't wait to see what he looks like in ST. Have they said if he is going to be there this year??

Some good notes on the deal:

The Royals gave a similar 18 year old LHP Cuban prospect, Noel Arguelles, $7M for 5 years on an MLB deal just 2 years ago. Arguelles immediately tore his labrum but came back strong and pitched in high Class A Wilmington last season, walking just 2.08 hitters per 9 IP and finishing with a 3.20 ERA. The good news for the Royals is that his stuff isn't even back yet and the good news for the Cubs is that his stuff likely rates below Concepcion's at this point.

Yeah... Management decided to save some money(500K) by giving the recently claimed Adrian Cardenas a shot at Blake's role. The Cubs will probably trade Blake over the next 10 days.

Hendry's trade for Blake was a good one... Lilly was on empty, as it pertains to his career. Getting Blake, along with some solid pitching prospects, was a strong return.

Blake is a tweener... He has the glove for 3B, but not the bat. He has the bat for 2B, but not the glove... And he struggles against lefties. He is still very young in his development... So he has a shot to become a regular... But it won't be with the Cubs.

As the off-season comes to its conclusion and we reflect on the ridiculous contracts that were handed out, David DeJesus' 2yr/10M deal, looks like an absolute steal. Especially for a guy who hits from the left side of the plate, plays above-average defense and is projected to bounce back, this season.
