The Ted Lilly Trade

I like the deal! Jim Hendry got nice value in return for Theriot and Lilly.

Blake DeWitt is a former 1st round pick, with nice potential at 2B. He gets his shot to be the Cubs future 2B. Now DeWitt may or may not become the future Cubs 2B...but to get a player who may be your future 2B for rental players at the deadline, is a pretty good deal. DeWitt has 15-20 HR potential at 2B, with solid defense. Plus, he's cheap, and under team control until 2014.

Brett Wallach is a former 2nd round pick, and a solid looking starting pitcher. He was the Dodgers 20th ranked prospect. He has the look of a possible #3 starter.

Kyle Smith is a former 5th round pick, who is having a very good season as a reliever.

I really like what Hendry was able to do here!

Any last words on Theriot???

Good trade, DeWitt's a good pickup, will be cheap the next 3-4 years for decent production. Apparently the Cubs weren't preparing to offer Lilly arbitration. Prospects seem alright.
Whether it comes from [the media] or even comes from some fans, who are deservedly upset at a given point, it's really just noise. If we let it affect our decision making, shame on us

Theriot was the starting SS on back-to-back, division winning champions, with the Cubs. He produced well, hit around .300, played solid defense, and was a team-first player. When the Cubs asked him to move from 2B to SS, he didn't complain once. When they asked him to move back to 2B, he didn't complain once. All the while, he embraced helping his 20 year old teammate, Starlin Castro, in any way he could.

Theriot isn't the most talented player in baseball, he doesn't have much power, and his arm doesn't remind you of Shawn Dunston...but he got it done, and was cheap.

He is an overachiever who continues to help whatever team he's on. He will help LA alot down the stretch!

Soriano, Fukudome, Bradley, to name a few, were all good moves by Hendry at the time. Then those guys put a Cub uniform on and can't seem to play any more to the talent level that they played before they got here. Hendry has done alot of good things here and the rewards are few and far between. Sorry Jim, it's not your fault!
