New Yankee Stadium?

NEW YORK (AP)—The Chicago Cubs might play the unofficial opener at the new Yankee Stadium.

The Cubs and Yankees are talking about playing an exhibition game or games the weekend before most teams open the regular season, on Monday, April 6.

While the Cubs are the Yankees’ first choice, the teams are still negotiating.

The official opener of the $1.6 billion ballpark is April 16 against Cleveland.

I'm assuming this would take the place of the Las Vegas games.... which add travel for the team as they would go from Arizona, to New York, to Houston. BTW, I'm glad they are starting the season in a place with a dome, and how appropriate that it be with the Astros who hold a grudge against us for the series that got messed up due to the hurricane.

It would be kinda neat to have the Cubs be one of the first teams to ever play in the NEW yankee stadium, however.

It only makes sense for MLB to have the two most popular teams open the new stadium.

I dont like the idea. While it would be nice to "christin" the new stadium, we would be flying from NY to Houston to open the season. Id rather stay in Vegas. Shorter trip.

It's just another exhibition game. It's of no real importance.

It's official.. two games... early april....

The Cubs will be the first to test the visiting team setup at the new Yankee Stadium in 2009.
The Cubs and Yankees will play the first exhibition games at the new Yankee Stadium on April 3 at 6:05 p.m. CT and April 4 at 12:05 p.m.

"The Cubs are thrilled to be the Yankees' first opponent in the new Yankee Stadium and are honored to take part in this historic event," said Cubs chairman Crane Kenney. "[Cubs manager] Lou Piniella and eight of our players had the honor to partake in All-Star Game festivities that helped say farewell to Yankee Stadium last summer, and we look forward to participating in the opening of the Yankees' new ballpark next spring."

The managers of the two teams have links to both clubs. Piniella played 11 seasons for the Yankees and was a member of two World Series championship teams in 1977-78. He also was the Yankees' manager from 1986-88. The Bombers are managed by former Cubs catcher Joe Girardi.

This will be the first time the Cubs will play the Yankees in New York since a three-game Interleague series in 2005.

The complete Cubs 2009 Spring Training schedule will be released at a later date. The Yankees will also release ticket information for the two exhibition games against the Cubs at a later date.
