Does anybody remember 1985?
Im sure the playoff collapse of the 1984 Cubs is etched indelibly in the memories of Cub fans, but how about 1985.This team was on its way to repeat as the division champion when the entire rotation went on the DL.Any comments on that forgotten year?

One of the ways to get an idea of the age of a fanis to ask if they remember Dennis Eckersley as a reliever - or as a starter (or at all). I remember him mostly as a starter and years like 1985 are the reason why. He was excellent and one of the games best (W.H.I.P under 1.00 that particular year. He walked almost no one).
This day and age I'm pretty sure the pundits would say that Jim Frey burned out that pitching staff .
1985 ranks as almost as heart-breaking as 1969 to me. That was a very good team .
More info:

Ron "the Penguin" Cey (3B) lead the team in salary at $1, 450, 000.

Yep, I remember. Expectations were very high that year and one by one our rotation was gone....

I would be one to remember Eck as a starter....with really long hair! This was about the time my true love for the team was born ('83-'85). I remember the heartbreak of '84 very well! I was only 11 years old, but it even hurt then.

Ugh, I used to watch the infamous 8th inning on Youtube and think "How in the world could that happen?". And now since I have Comcast digital cable, I have the On Demand channel, and they finally got that Cubs documentary from HBO on there "Wait 'til Next Year". It's a really good documentary, and it talks about the 2003 season, and I always get so sad watching it, and I start yelling at the tv when they show Gonzalez dropping the perfect double play ball. I still think he's the one to blame, not Bartman. God, I could go on for awhile, but I think I'll stop now.

Yeah 1985 started out good for the Cubbies then 1 by 1 the rotation went on the DL. Sut wasn't as effective as he was in 84. I think thats the year Shawon Dunston made his debut. 1985 was a hard team to watch but 2004 was even harder in my opinion. When you have the playoffs in your grasp and you gotta win ballgames against the weaker teams the Cubs should have been 7-2 those last 9 ballgames instead of 2-7. I still can't bring myself to watch the 8th inning of game 6 NLCS, because Holy Cow was right Gonzales should have made at least the force out at 2nd then maybe turning a double play. The Cubs would have gone into the bottom of the 8th with a 3-1 advantage. I can't watch it now don't think I am ever going to either. It still brings a tear to my eye.

Wasn't George Frazier the WIll Ohman of 1985??
In 2003, i was so pumped telling my wife and 1 year old that they're watching history. By the middle of the 8th, i was crying.......
