Do any of you guys remember Pat Pieper?

With the all-star break, I am ready to get back to the regular schedule. Since there is no day-to-day play going on, I thought it would be a good time to throw out a little Cubs nostalgia.

Pat Pieper was not only the voice you heard announcing the starting lineups, from as much as I can remember back in the 60's and 70's, but he also announced the players during the game when they would come to the plate to hit. I'm sure he goes much farther than the 60's, but he was as much a fixture of Wrigley Field as Jack Brickhouse in those days. He also entertained the fans with his musical prowess on the organ throughout the course of their Wrigley experience back in those days.

He had a very distinct style of announcing the starting lineups.

You bet I remember him! Of course, that shows my age...he was a fixture at Wrigley.

Absolutely! Growing up, every kid did an imitation of Pat when we were doing our "sandlot" games.

"'tention. 'tention please. Have your pencils and scorecards ready...."

Pat Pieper served as the Chicago Cubs field (public address) announcer from 1916 to 1974, a span of 59 years. Coincidentally, his first year as announcer was also the first season in which Wrigley Field was used as the home park of the Cubs. He first used a PA system in 1932 - before that, he used a megaphone. As field announcer, he announced the lineups, who was up to bat, and so forth. He missed just 16 home games during his time with the Cubs - none after 1924. After games, he'd serve as a waiter at night.[1]
Although he started as the field announcer in 1916, he had been employed by the Cubs since 1904. Originally, he served as a vendor at the West Side Grounds.
His trademark phrase at the beginning of each game was, "Attention! Attention, please! Have your pencils and scorecards ready, and I will give you the correct lineups for today's game."
Pieper died on October 22, 1974. In 1996, he was inducted into the Chicago Cubs Walk of Fame.
