More expectations this year or 2003?

I think we -- and most of the world would agree, that the Cubs are the favorites to win the Central this year.

So, my PRESEASON (wasting time 'til the season thread asks) do you think this team in 2008 is better than the 2003 squad???

In a nutshell... I am asking which team (2003) or (2008) is more talented.

I dont think that the Cubs had any expectation in 2003, since they had been coming of a horrid season. Much like the 07' club was.

I think the better question would be this

"Higher expectations, 2004 or 2008"

both years we came off a surprising playoff appearance, with an exit early then we should have had.

This team has more talent because its a little more balanced on both sides. I am at the point were I think 2003's rotation was a fluke, Prior will never be like that again. Wood has a chance in the bullpen. Speaking of bullpen, I really think this is a bullpen full of studs! The lineup is a push because we got 3 potential MVP's in Lee, A-Ram and Soriano. In 2003 we had Sosa as our stud, yeah I know he was going down hill, but he still hit for great power. I really don't miss Sosa BTW, but I do miss the Pepsi commercials when he went to a taco stand and got a taco that was too hot, and needed a Pepsi! I have always missed seeing that for some reason, maybe its the fact that ALL commercials suck now, I just turn away during a ballgame in middle innings.

I forgot the most important part, Lou makes me have VERY high expectations for this team, what they did last season was just a small taste IMO. break out early, and run away and hide!

04' we were picked to go all the way, iim not quite hearing that this year. 03' we sholuld have won the whole thing, so 04' was supposed to be a gimme.

this year, i hear def. win the division, maybe win the NL, but not so much winning it all

Yeah I agree. Expectations were mild for '03. In '04 SI picked the Cubs to win it all. Gammons said Wood would be the Cy Young. Most people expected the Cubs to waltz right into the playoffs. This year, I think the Cubs are the favorite to win the Central, and that's about it.

03's bench & BP was very mediocre. They had a platoon at 1st with Simon & Karros. Damien Miller was our starting C. The bench consisted of guys like Goodwin,Womack, Ramon Martinez & Ojeda. The BP had Farnsworth & J.Cruz who were decent. However, Borowski,Remlinger,Guthrie,Veres & Alfonseca were all mediocre.

The 08' team has more depth & is better all-around. I would take the 03' rotation of Wood,Prior,Clement,Estes & Zambrano over this years rotation.

I liked that bench,, The bench 1b was veryy good, and guys like Goodwin and Womack were still producing in those days....

If this team doesn't win a WS it will be a failure according to the media.
